I currently hold my Bachelor’s of Arts in Business from Arizona State University. I was previously employed as a food and beverage manager at Vistal Golf Club from 2010-2015. Although, I have no direct experience in the dental field, I do possess traits and life experiences that are fitting for the program.

I am aware that the Dental Hygiene Program is an extensive and competitive one that requires extreme dedication, passion, and discipline. Graduating from Arizona State University in three years, working 25+ hours a week, maintaining a G.P.A above 3.0, and participating in greek life has given me experience in commitment that I can carry over to your program. I believe this reflects my drive, intelligence and passion to succeed. My time as a food and beverage manager has also given me a tremendous amount of knowledge that would apply to your program and my future as a Dental Hygienist. Hayley and I had a good experience at Dr. Mangelson’s office. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. While we waited for the doctor to prepare for his surgery, one of the hygienists, Karen, let us into her operatory to observe her scaling a patient’s teeth. She showed us a couple of instruments she loves and gave us some tips on working in private practice. She told us about how she and some other hygienists get together in a “study group” for continuing education. An interesting thing she told us is that Dr. Stanley Malamed was one of her professors at USC so she invited him to Utah to speak to several dentists in the area in two weeks.…

I often accompanied many of my relatives to their dental appointments as a translator and have always been curious about the work done in a dental office that cannot be seen during appointment visits. I was very lucky to be given an opportunity in high school to shadow a dentist for one day and personally observe various dental procedures that were performed. I have learned a lot just by observing the steps and seeing what kinds of instruments were involved. In applying for UB Dental Clinical Observation Program, I am looking for an opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience in a field that I strongly feel passionate about. The Clinical Observation Program will help me accurately understand the dynamics and responsibilities that this…

In five or so years I hope to be settled into a job as a dental hygienist. Preferably a job in Rutherford county or surrounding areas. I became interested in the career field in high school after speaking to the hygienist at my dentist office. She was extremely supportive and truthful about what to expect out of this career path. I have also completed 40 hours of job shadowing that have also given me information on what to expect. While most of my activities in my youth consisted of mainly sports, they taught me things such as control, patiences and using my intuition that can be utilized in my future career. Some of these things might include when a hygienist needs steady hands to scrap the plaque off of teeth and not damage anything. Another instance would be knowledge of how to properly use the tools for the job. Patiences will come in handy when working with smaller children. For me to be able to do this as a career I must attend a technical school and obtain a degree in dental hygiene. It takes around 2 years to complete the program. I will be attending Wake Tech in Raleigh not only because I enjoy the area, but their program timeline fits best for me. I would like to have steady employment in 10 years and be able to travel the world. A job with flexible hours is very important to me since I desire an active lifestyle. The typical dentist hours allow for this which is a perk of my future job.…

I chose to reapply to the College of Dental Medicine at WesternU because I was very impressed by the school on the day of my interview. All of the faculty members I met were helpful and approachable, and the students on the student panel during the Q&A session showed their passion for dentistry and their pride in the WesternU community, all while giving genuine advice. I admired the tight bonds between students at WesternU, regardless of their seniority or the specific programs they were pursuing. As an institution that operates as a graduate school for health-related professions, WesternU provides an optimal learning environment for students, encouraging them to stay stimulated and inspired by their peers.…

Not only is it necessary to plan for this career and know the tasks and education needed, but recognition and awareness of the potential income, related jobs, and why this job is for me needs to be researched. My potential income would be about $72,910 a year, which that isn’t bad considering the average a person makes a year is $65,751 per year. Some of the related jobs that are close to a dental hygienist is a dental assistant who makes $36,940, a dentist that makes $159,770, a medical assistant who makes $131,540. completing general dentistry, most dental schools require a letter of recommendation from a general dentist. Shadowing hours should also first come from a general dentist, then a specialized dentist. Furthermore, I have already become a member for Future Dentist Club on campus. Fransiska Lee, the free clinics coordinator for FDC, creates the bridge for students to get to know these professionals. They hold free clinics in downtown Riverside once every two weeks for three hours each. By going to these events, I can slowly build up the hours needed. There are no specific hours that are required but most dental applicants have around 300 hours (Lee, Fransiska). One imperative advice for pre-dental students from a specialist company, Gap Medics,…

As a senior, I have realized that all along, the dentistry field has been one of my many interests. Unlike many children, growing up as a child I have always enjoyed going to the dentist office for my teeth cleanings. Now that I am 17 and graduating in the next five months, I have decided that the Human and Health Services field, Dental Hygiene in particular, is the career pathway that I am most interested in and would like to pursue further after graduation. In pursuing this occupation, I understand that there are many personality traits that I must present. Since Dental Hygienists are around people each day at work, a hygienist must be outgoing, ambitious, and willing to interact with several different types of people. One must also get along with his or her co-workers, be a hard worker, and be willing to adapt to change that may occur in their workplace; these would be considered as required personality traits to excel in this occupation.…
