Out of all experiences I've had, the one that has been meaningful to me is taking my last yearbook pictures for my senior year. I wasn't taking pictures for a mugshot and a crime scene photographer wasn’t taking pictures of my lifeless body. I reached a milestone in my life that many people told me I couldn’t achieve. Though I hadn’t walked across the stage for graduation yet, it felt good to do something that many people told me I wouldn’t ever experience being a young black girl in America. The reason why this specific moment was meaningful to me is because it made me think about the many people my age who never got to experience this; the feeling of being ALMOST done with high school. I could've been like many African American people my…

If I had more time to do this I would change my defining moment. My defining moment would probably meeting my boyfriend. Meeting my boyfriend was a big impact in my life. He was the person that was there for me at my lowest point and my highest point in life. So before we met, I’m slack in school and turn in most of my homework/assignments late. I procrastinate a lot and not do it as good. After we meet he was my motivation for school. He would tell me to do good in school and always do my homework ahead of time. He even encourage me to do my homework even though I felt sleepy or lazy. Another thing is that he would always check up on me. For example, he would ask me “how’s your grades in school?” and this makes me feel like he really cares…

I was told that my mom was sick and had to live in the hospital for a little while. A defining moment in my life was my 8th grade graduation. To most people who went to Hopkins, this may not seem like a big deal but to me, attending a private Christian elementary/middle school for the past 10 years was kind of a big deal. I had just spent the past 10 years with about the same 18 people and just like that- we would never see each other at school together ever again. The switch from a parochial middle school to a public junior high was difficult. The fact that I was no longer with my friends who I build strong relationships with hurt me a lot. It was hard to make friends in 9th grade because I missed all of my old friends so much. This gigantic transition changed many parts of who I thought I was. When at a religious school,…

I had a lot of friends and family here, I was on a little league team, everything is great here, and I didn't like the idea of leaving that all behind. I didn't even know where Georgia was. But I knew I had no choice, so that last day of school I said my goodbyes to my friends and teachers with sadness in my heart, knowing I wouldn't see them again next year. I got home, packed everything, and closed the door of the empty house. We drove thirteen hours to our new home. During those thirteen hours of sleeping and staring out the window, a mix of sadness…
