David A. Kolb
David Kolb born 1939 is a Professor of Organizational Behaviour in the Weatherhead School of Management, University, and Cleveland (Wikipedia 2013). Kolb studied social psychology and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967.
In 2008 from the National Society of Experiential Education Kolb received the Educational Pioneers of the Year award. In addition Kolb has an interest in the nature of individual and social change, experiential learning and career development (infed). Kolb is an educational theorist who focuses on experiential learning he’s also been awarded four honorary degrees for his input to experiential learning.
David Kolb proposed his famous experiential learning cycle in 1984, to help individuals understand how adults learn through the process of their cognitive abilities. He suggested that during adolescences and early childhood individuals begin to choose the way they like to process information and use it to make sense of their experience.
He’s cycle consist of four basic stages which an individual goes through.
The first stage is the concrete experience this is when a new experience or situation is carried out.
The second stage is the reflective Observation this when an individual reviews what they did wrong or right.
The third stage consists of recognising what the person did wrong or right and make an understanding of it by modifying an existing abstract concept.
The last stage is when the individual applies what they have learnt from the previous the task and carry out the task again to see the new results.
