David Pelzer Character
Character Essay
Have you ever felt the need to do something or help someone in need? Well, David Pelzer did. David is a determined book writer, father, son, counselor, and much more. He has written three extraordinary books( A child called It, The lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave) on the child abuse he encountered. He wasn’t always an honest person which made me think about how honest I am with myself and others. Although, he wasn’t always an honest person he was never ever a selfish person and that’s what made me start thinking less selfishly.
Dave is a middle aged man with short, brown hair. He was married to a sweet, young lady named Patsy and they had an energetic son (Stephen). Later he realized it wasn't working between him and Patsy so he remarried and now has a wonderful wife (Marsha). He used to work in his green air force jumpsuit, but found that helping children was a much better job for him. He now is a full time speaker, counselor, and book writer for children who need the help. David is a prodigious, confident, loyal, and sympathetic adult who proudly believes when you start something you finish it. When he talks

His father (Stephen) never really bothered to help because he knew he wasn’t able to stop the abuse from happening. Eventually David was given some help from counselors for the abuse and taken into foster care. After being out of the house for awhile he realized what he wanted more than anything in the world for his parents to love him and be proud of him. Awhile later David’s father passed away from drinking and bequeathed his firefighter badge to David. Getting the badge meant a lot to David, it showed that his father still cared about him. Losing his father and receiving the badge made David tremendously want a relationship with his mother. It really surprised me that after all that he has been through he still wanted his mother to have a relationship with

He said that "Pelzer has an exquisite recall of his abuse, but almost no recall of anything that would authenticate that abuse," such as any details about his mother.{{cite news|first=Pat|last=Jordan|date=July 28, 2002|url=http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/28/magazine/dysfunction-for-dollars.html?pagewanted=all|title=Dysfunction For Dollars|publisher=New York Times}} Two members of his family: his maternal grandmother and brother, have disputed his book. One of his younger brothers, Stephen, denies that any abuse took place, and says that he thinks David was placed in foster care because "he started a fire and was caught shoplifting." However, his other brother [[Richard Pelzer]] is author of the book ' 'A Brother 's Journey, ' ' which confirms much of what David has said and describes his own abuse when David was finally removed from the home.{{cn|date=March 2013}} In regards to this Dave has said that Stephen had affection towards his mother and that, "He misses her terribly because she protected him". Dave had stated in his book, A Child Called "It" that "his mother would punish him, for "Mouthing Off" by making her special batch of ammonia and Clorox and locking him in the bathroom." Before all of this took place, Dave was considered part of the family and was loved by both of his parents. Things were normal and he was treated like any other child would of been treated. Then one day things began to change and never went back to normal. Catherine was an alcoholic and a lot of the incidents occurred after she had been drinking. Stephen, Dave’s father, worked as a firefighter and was not at home a lot of the time, although when he was home he did not do anything to help Dave, but at the same time he did not participate in the abuse.…

There is much to admire about Dave Pelzer. He proudly served his country during Desert Storm, and has received commendations from Presidents Reagan, Bush the First, and Clinton for his work as a motivational speaker. His other honors include being named California's Volunteer of the Year in 1990, one of 1993's Ten Outstanding Young Americans, and one of the Outstanding Young Persons of the World for 1994. In addition, he is a best-selling author and a loving husband and father. That's a lofty set of accomplishments for any man, yet what I admire most about Dave Pelzer is that he didn't grow up to be an abusive, alcoholic, psychotic mess. He certainly had reason to.…

If we look at David in relation to Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development “individuals develops through eight genetically programmes sequency of stages” bingam et al P.78, at age 21 David should have moved through the first 5 stages of development and be at the Intimacy versus Isolation stage. This is when the individual builds intimate and sexual relationships and bonds with others, but as David has very little social interaction with anyone other than his parents and small team of carers he has clearly not reached this stage of development. David is in fact still at the Initiative versus Guilt stage where he requires a lot of support from his parent and carers in new environments and when meeting new people.…

The next part of the book is my favourite as it shows David enjoying happiness, but it also the saddest for David. He realises his mistakes and learns how to repent for them. The main event in this part of the book is how David saves Maria from the fire and is invited into Maria’s home. This is where he meets the 14 year old boy, Carlo, again. David only interacts with Carlo is really necessary and doesn’t want to even be in the same area of him for more than he needs to be. Maria on the other hand loves to be around David and would always affectionately ask him questions. David would answer this became a daily ritual and David had many happy days with the family. One day, late at night the parents of the children were taking together. David had been listening to this conversation as the…

The poem “David”, written by Earle Birney is a very emotional and allure piece. The major theme that pursues throughout the whole poem is maturity. Which includes the beginning of such, and all the obstacles that must be overcome. The tone is a very cynical one, especially when David asks Bob to push him off the cliff. Birney also uses figurative language and poetic devices to create an element of tension, complexity and emotion.…
