Texas history, as we learned about it in text books, has only told half of the story of Texas Independence. Every school child learns the story of the Alamo and how the brave souls paid with their lives for our freedom. What the historians failed to mention was all of the patriots who were involved, leading up to the Alamo and those who fought after. One of these patriots was Juan Sequin, who ended up paying for his patriotism with banishment, and being marked a traitor. It would be many years after his death before the full story of what this man, and others, actually achieved.…

Despite the conflicting public opinion, Chris McCandless succeeded in his goal to survive in the wilderness and taught the world valuable lessons in the process. Chris McCandless “probably died on August 18th, 112 days after he had walked into the wild.” (119, Krakauer) He survived with very little gear and food, even though he was essentially cut off from the world. To have lived for a little over three months totally self-sufficient is impressive. Chris’s goal was to be independent and live off the land for a while. In his mindset, he achieved in his goal. Wayne Westerberg had employed Chris for two short amounts of time, but said “He was the type of person who insisted on living out his beliefs.” (Krakauer, 67) This was why Chris was determined to go to Alaska, instead of listening to the protests of others.…

We are able to learn that although his years in slavery were not unbearable, that there were still problems and instances where he and his family were mistreated and assaulted. This letter shows us that not all slaves were left to suffer after they gained their freedom and that some families, including Jourdon Anderson's, had managed to maintain a good religious and family mindset even through all of the hardships they faced. We are able to see that African Americans were able to at least somewhat overcome their past and make a better future for themselves. Jourdon and his wife were a great example of a family that continued looking forward and working towards a better life for their…

In his essay Richard Rodriguez narrates a particular event in his life using specific details throughout his writing to present the complications present in his family. Cabello is a nurturer and when she’s not alone she teaches the youngest orangutan how to survive. I observed Cabello offer her back up as means of transportain and assist the youngest on swinging and climbing. When the aggressively annoying orangutang came back to fight Cabello always made sure the youngest was out of harms way. While it may be true for other animals as well I think the qualities of humans are more apparent in the actions of a primate. Amid note taking I looked up to see Cabello staring at me with the look of someone deap in thought part of me thought she was a human. The other part of me started to question whether or not I to am the subject of a research assignment. I turned to my phone and found articles upon articles stating the vast cognitive skills of the Orangutans in relation to humans. I can’t help but wonder what Cabello is thinking as she stares at me am I friend of foe, and if the glass was removed who would be the first to go. Since the evidence I revealed proved intelligence but the inability to make connections like humans I think the orangutans are fascinated and unless we do something they find to be threatening we are not harmful to each other.…

In February 2009, 12 year old Jordan Brown was the main suspect in his own stepmother’s murder. She was found with a gunshot wound to the head, she was eight months pregnant. Although it was very rare to charge someone so young as an adult, but the Pennsylvania prosecutor left them little choice, it is also very rare for a 12 year old boy to commit a violent crime such as he did. Jordan’s defense argues that there were no true witnesses to his crime, no actual proof, but they also say the 4 year old daughter had heard a loud boom, which would have obviously been the gun being shot.…

Picture a vast scope stretching from the Red River Basin to the Plains of Colorado to the Arkansas River to the Rio Grande. Envision the diverse groups of Natives that live on the land peacefully. Imagine the golden Pueblos of the Acoma Indians, the Hogan huts of the Navajo, and the wiki-ups of the Lipan. Then imagine this picturesque view shattered by European imperialism. The Europeans during the 16th and 17th centuries took several different approaches to the New World. The French saw potential business and trading partners, the English sought territory to expand their empire, and the Spanish were much more complex. The Spanish made one purposeful thrust into the New World in the 16th century to claim the industrious Natives as subjects of the Crown and Church. A century later, the Spanish returned to the New World. The Spanish unleashed forces of change that changed the lives of the native people throughout the arena that the Anglo-Americans call the Southwest. The Spanish affected the culture and structure of the Southwest by way of religion, architecture, and agriculture and livestock. This culture shock in the Southwest by means of…
