Boston is a large city which is located in Massachusetts. The estimated population of Boston in July of 2008 was 645,169 (City Data, 2011). Crime within the city of Boston has over the years been steadily declining. Though most major crimes in the FBI crime index have shown small percentages of decline from previous years, there are some areas of crime such as burglary that have shown an increase over the years. As the population of Boston increases it is essential that the levels of crime within the city are analyzed to reduce the levels of criminal activity while providing a safe community for citizens to reside in.…
The development of gangs over the many years of their existence has caused the growth of different gangs and gang members to all parts of the world. These developing gangs have created major attention and awareness to this culture of life that is becoming so common amongst our communities. There have been said to be around 30,000 or more gangs with at least 800,000 gang members in the United States, whom were fully active in 2007. In 2009, the statics showed 147,000 in the United States prison and detention (jail) facilities and 900,000 living within our communities around the United States. Gangs in America and around the world often bring our young kids into this violent life of guns, drugs, murder, burglary, and many more criminal activities and heinous crimes.…
Examining the potential causes of man's violence towards each other is a far more philosophical endeavor than this paper. Suffice it to say that the causes of violence goes far beyond just the availability of a certain convenient method. This perhaps is one of the first, great oversights of the Brady Act: the idea that denying the sale of registered handguns to certain individuals deemed likely to misuse them is going…

The article I chose to read was titled “The Gang Culture Continues to Grow”. This article explained aspects of the gang culture in America, and how it has grown over the years to be bigger and more violent then ever. Gangs have been around for centuries. The earliest recording of a gang was a gang named rebellious children, which was mentioned in 2 Kings 2:23-25 of the Bible. Gangs have continued to grow over the years, and now are present in almost every bigger sized city in America, and around the world. In the 1980’s, gangs were usually found only on the east and west coasts of America. Now, they are spreading in land to more rural areas to set up shop. This means more violence, more criminal activity, and more problems for the police and the surrounding communities with its law biting citizens. Very rarely will anything good come from gangs, so controlling them and prosecuting its members for crimes committed is a very important aspect of police forces of bigger cities.…
Chicago is always in the news nationwide and some people might wonder why. Chicago is well known for its crime. The city has been struggling with this problem for a while. The biggest problem that plagues Chicago is its gang and gun violence because too many people are dying due to it. Chicago has alarmingly high statistics when it comes to gun violence in comparison to other major cities. Although the crime rate is slowly dropping, too many teenagers and young children end up being victims of fatal shootings.…
When a gang becomes a genuine gang it is at this time when they become a great concern as a threat to society. The formation, expansion and the consequent actions of gangs greatly affect society. It has been consistently found that gangs are normally linked to serious crimes and violence (Decker, Melde & Pyrooz, 2013). As these gangs become constant and stable fixtures in their community they become a permanent option for marginalized…
Crime is everywhere, but more recently gun violence has been plaguing our country. This paper will introduce you to the issue of gun violence in America. Little by little gun violence is dominating our country statistics from the National Institute of Justice state that gun violence has peaked in the past years"467,321 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm in 2011. In the same year, data collected by the FBI show that firearms were used in 68 percent of murders,…
The video spoke on the gun violence that is taking place in Chicago. Gun violence and gang leaders are the main reason for the numerous amounts of death in Chicago. After doing some research, Chicago continues to with the highest homicide rates in the United States. In Miles Bryan’s article he states that, Chicago has had more than 700 homicides in the year of 2016. In September of 2016 he also states that the city of Chicago surpassed 2015s killings by 470. (Bryan. M, 2016).…
Gangs have become an epic problem in the United States. It is very essential important in attempting to solve this problem by fully understanding how we can prevent individuals from joining a gang. A gang is group of three of more people that share a common bond and that are loyal to one another, whether it’s for economic reason or violence. The National Gang Center estimates that 32.4% of all cities in the United States experienced gang problems in 2008 (National Criminal Justice Reference Service, 2010). There are three main reasons why I fell that gangs have impacted the criminal justice system in three phenomenal ways. One, gangs have affected many communities; two, gangs influence our…
The article does a great job at analyzing the different factors that can conclude to gang joining. There is a mutual understanding that some environmental factors could apply to all gang race/ethnicity, but there is a difference in background, for each ethnicity/race, in why they were pushed into joining a gang. This article emphasizes in trying to stop gangs, but they want to understand if a program made for specific race/ethnicities could make a better outcome to prevent gang involvement. The next article focuses on the specifics of violence in percent black and percent…
Most gang problems begin in small cities and rural counties. They may exist more in small cities and poor areas because of kids living condition. They’re more exposed to violent crime and see that lifestyle as something great. The factors can be physical abuse, having access to weapons and drugs, living poverty, having access to weapons and drugs, and lack of success in places such as school. Factors like these are the things that are increasing gangs jurisdictions. “The number of jurisdictions reporting youth gangs increased by 4.1 percent for the Nation as a whole, as shown by comparison of the estimated number of jurisdictions reporting gangs prior to 1996 with those reporting gangs in 1996.” (OJJDP) “Youth gang members were estimated to have been involved in 2,364 homicides in large cities and 561 homicides in suburban counties.” (OJJDP) gangs problem in this country is significant and affects communities of all sizes. According to NYGS surveys, gang problem will continue to grow over the following years to…
As long as governments exist, there will always be crime for them to combat. A portion of this crime is, and will continue to be, organized crime. The United States is constantly working to protect its citizens from transnational criminal alliances, but the streets of this nation are still being crippled by domestic organizations. The 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment declares, “Gangs are expanding, evolving, and posing an increasing threat to U.S. communities nationwide.” One of the most frightening and overwhelming atrocities in this country is the fact that a great deal of the gang-related violence suffered is being delivered by the nation’s…
Gun control and gun rights have been an issue that has been debated for decades. Whenever there has been a mass shooting of any magnitude, it seems that the debate heats up even more. Consideration must be given as to what the benefits are of these gun control laws. Gun control laws must also be written as to not violate the Second Amendment of the Constitution as well. There have been many studies accomplished to determine if gun control laws actually do reduce the amount of violent crimes. These studies have discovered that there is no link between gun control laws and violent crime reduction. Even though most individuals have their different views on gun control, most seem to believe that the current laws do not have an effect on violent crimes. The hypothesis of gun control does not have an effect of reducing violent crimes was tested and the hypothesis is supported by the data collected within this thesis. The data used was collected from studies by other individuals, a survey of the public opinion, and other statistics recorded from previous years of violent crimes.…
