Daedalus And Icarus
The” Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” best represents the themes of Ovids’ story “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” and Brueghel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Some similarities between the three works is the depiction of Icarus flying, the melted wings, Icarus drowning and the ignorance of the towns people.”Musee de Beaux Arts” does not include the incident where the wings melted. “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is more representative of the stories and painting themes because they all demonstrate what the consequences may be when one does not listen to direction.

In the story of Daedalus and Icarus, the story mentions Daedalus being exiled on the island of Crete as compared to the other works that have no mention of

In the section of the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men stop to rest on an island inhabited by the Cyclops, Polyphemus. The crew discovered the Cyclops's cave and decided to stay, not knowing it was Polyphemus’s cave. When the Cyclops returned to his cave Odysseus expects Polyphemus to present him with gifts or else Zeus will rain his wrath upon Polyphemus. Consequently, Polyphemus becomes angered, snaches two of Odesseus’s men and devours them for dinner. The cyclops rolls a massive stone over the entrance of the cave and lays down to go to sleep. Icarus is a character in Greek myth. According to the myth he and his father fly with wings that his father made out of wax and feathers. They are trying to escape from a mean king. Icarus' father warns him not to fly to close to the sun or the wax would melt, ruining his wings. Icarus is caught up in the glory of his flight and does not heed his fathers warning. His wings fall apart and he plummets to the sea and drowns. The myth of Icarus appears to be fairly straight forward, and yet three poets write poems expressing three different perspectives using specific techniques. The three poets and their poems are Edward Field's "Icarus," William Carlos Williams' "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus," and Muriel Rukeyser's "Waiting for Icarus."…

The “Landslide” painting is unique in itself but also shares some characteristics with Chiura Obata’s “Sunset Water Tower.” This painting is similar in that it was done with watercolor on paper, has a horizontal orientation and was done in the same time period; 1943. This painting differs however with the use of light, colors, use of line and theme. This painting is of a water tower in the middle of a field, with farms surrounding it and mountains in the background, giving it a variety of landscape. It also has a sunset overtop of the water tower leading into light clouds. Hence the name “Sunset Water Tower.” The use of line is very noticeable in this painting. “Sunset Water Tower” is more acceptable in which the time period it was created. The lines are symmetrical with more use of lighter colors. This work of art follows on a horizontal line in which one can see because of the sunset.…

I absolutely love everything about Greek mythology and I’m very interested in reading anything related to Greek myths and tales, so I’m very familiar with the tale of The Fall of Icarus. When I saw the cartoon I had a smile on my face because I thought it was cute and a little ironic at the same time. The “Caution: Keep out of direct sunlight” sign on the box was actually a nice allusion to Icarus’ father’s caution about not flying close to the sun. In Greek mythology, Icarus is a brilliant character because even though he made a mistake that lead to his demise, he’s somehow a symbol for being fearless and limitless. Technically speaking, Icarus might have survived had he paid attention to what his father, Daedalus said about not flying too…

Despite the incredible, even heroic invention of Icarus’s wings, his over-confidence and arrogance by disregarding the warnings of his father destroyed him in the end. The message can be interpreted from the painting that the poison of the human condition comes from such vices, and eventually leads to downfall in a person’s life and in society. Human Pride and arrogance are not lasting qualities in the scheme of world order. The higher Icarus choose to fly towards the sun, the more his wings melted away, much like high-flying ambitions fueled by selfish desires erode our life. One way in which Bruegel’s painting has a moral voice is in the sense one gets of a lack of society’s remorse for the passing of Icarus. Even with his passing, life seems to go on and perhaps for the better.…

After Ovid’s narration of the Greek myth of Icarus in the Metamorphoses (AD 8), the legend has been transported, represented and interpreted through the time by several artists. Probably Brueghel, 1500 years later Ovid, painted Landscape with the Fall al Icarus (1560s), representing or rather demystifying Icarus’s myth in a “new era”: the Renaissance. Influenced by the painting as other poets, the 20-th century American poet William Carlos Williams, keeping the same title of Brueghel’s painting wrote Landscape with the Fall of Icarus: a unique commentary of the painting from a modern point of view. Historically as artistically it is interesting to compare distinct artistic representations of the same object in different art movement periods. The myth allows those artists to express other messages, concerning themes analogous to their current times. By using many Renaissance art techniques, Brueghel moves the viewer to register a protest against the unconcern for catastrophe inherent in the preoccupation of the on-going and never interrupted life. Williams, through different techniques, propose the same protest in a modernist and imagist poetry style. To clearly understand the message expressed by these mediums is necessary to hark back to Ovid’s narrative. Narrating the story of Icarus in the Metamorphoses (8.183-235), Ovid describes a different situation than what the painting and the poem depict.…

In Greek Mythology a rivalry always occurs between certain Gods and Goddesses. In the case of Apollo and Dionysus there is no exception. They are half brothers, both sons of Zues and they compete just as most brothers do. Though the two Greek Gods, Apollo and Dionysus, were actually very similar in some ways, they severely contrasted in others.…

Decreasing morals in a society result in a downfall of one’s ideas, feelings, and emotions. Nevertheless, humans have engulfed the nonchalant idea of only caring for themselves and the world that revolves around their mindset. In “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” Ovid distinctively describes the on-going father-son relationship between the two mythological figures. As Daedalus warns Icarus to never be too much or too little, he resents his father’s words. While Icarus was flying, he flew too close to the blazing sun, resulting in him falling in rushing waves of the nearby ocean.…

    Fall of Icarus Poems

After reading Landscape With The Fall of Icarus by William Carlos Williams and Musee Des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden, a clear idea is present. Both authors seem to minimize the importance of Icarus’s death, but with what intent? In both poems, self-concern outweighs any intentions to help Icarus. It is clear to me what the authors were trying to express by implying that people simply had their own things to do, too used to disaster to even care about anyone besides themselves.…

Interpretations of the Fall of Icarus Different descriptions of one story can determine the impact forced upon one’s heart, mind, and soul. Brueghel, Auden, and Williams, composers of three divergent interpretations of the fall of Icarus, illustrate and explain the central thought of man’s failure. Brueghel expresses the lack of concern the surrounding people possess for Icarus though his illustration, while Auden generally states that tragedy occurs. As for Williams, he vaguely interacts with the horrendous accident of Icarus, and simply states the story as it has been told before.…

Ovid’s “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” and Aristotle’s “On Happiness,” each devise and apply the Aristotelian mean to maintain the concept that one must keep a balance between two excesses in life so that humanity can avoid ultimate disaster, because Aristotle says we are a product of our parents, and if they fail, we will most likely follow in their footsteps. In Aristotle’s “On Happiness,” Aristotle analyzes the Aristotelian mean and about how we must keep a balance between two extremes in our life. In “The Story Daedalus and Icarus,” Daedalus tells Icarus to fly in the middle, not too low or too high, obviously a reference to the Aristotelian mean.…
