The” Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” best represents the themes of Ovids’ story “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” and Brueghel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Some similarities between the three works is the depiction of Icarus flying, the melted wings, Icarus drowning and the ignorance of the towns people.”Musee de Beaux Arts” does not include the incident where the wings melted. “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is more representative of the stories and painting themes because they all demonstrate what the consequences may be when one does not listen to direction.

    Icarus is a character in Greek myth. According to the myth he and his father fly with wings that his father made out of wax and feathers. They are trying to escape from a mean king. Icarus' father warns him not to fly to close to the sun or the wax would melt, ruining his wings. Icarus is caught up in the glory of his flight and does not heed his fathers warning. His wings fall apart and he plummets to the sea and drowns. The myth of Icarus appears to be fairly straight forward, and yet three poets write poems expressing three different perspectives using specific techniques.     I absolutely love everything about Greek mythology and I’m very interested in reading anything related to Greek myths and tales, so I’m very familiar with the tale of The Fall of Icarus. When I saw the cartoon I had a smile on my face because I thought it was cute and a little ironic at the same time. The “Caution: Keep out of direct sunlight” sign on the box was actually a nice allusion to Icarus’ father’s caution about not flying close to the sun.     After Ovid’s narration of the Greek myth of Icarus in the Metamorphoses (AD 8), the legend has been transported, represented and interpreted through the time by several artists. Probably Brueghel, 1500 years later Ovid, painted Landscape with the Fall al Icarus (1560s), representing or rather demystifying Icarus’s myth in a “new era”: the Renaissance. Influenced by the painting as other poets, the 20-th century American poet William Carlos Williams, keeping the same title of Brueghel’s painting wrote Landscape with the Fall of Icarus: a unique commentary of the painting from a modern point of view. Historically as artistically it is interesting to compare distinct artistic representations of the same object in different art movement periods. The myth allows those artists to express other messages, concerning themes analogous to their current times. By using many Renaissance art techniques, Brueghel moves the viewer to register a protest against the unconcern for catastrophe inherent in the preoccupation of the on-going and never interrupted life. Williams, through different techniques, propose the same protest in a modernist and imagist poetry style. To clearly understand the message expressed by these mediums is necessary to hark back to Ovid’s narrative. Narrating the story of Icarus in the Metamorphoses (8.183-235), Ovid describes a different situation than what the painting and the poem depict.…
