Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that has regular symptoms such as persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. According to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, ADHD begins in childhood with between 3 and 7% of school-age children have ADHD, and it usually lasts into adulthood. (MMWR, Sept 2, 2005) About 30 to 50% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults. (www.webmd.com)
ADHD affects around 5 in 100 school-aged children in the UK. It is around three times more common in boys than in girls. Although ADHD is usually diagnosed in children aged 3-7 years, it may not be recognised until much later in life. Sometimes it is not diagnosed until adulthood. (www.patient.co.uk)

Parents can feel overwhelmed and unable to cope with their childs behaviour or may avoid social situations in the hope of avoiding problematic behaviour, this can make both parent and child feel iscolated. (www.netdoctor.co.uk) According to the book ‘Coping with ADHD’ all these symptoms will last if both a child and their parents are not taught how to correctly cope and deal with the symptoms. The book lays out how to manage situations more calmly and this in turn will help improve a parent-child relationship. …show more content…
Family inheritance is one of the most significant factors of developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Statistics show that if a childs parent has ADHD, they have a 50% risk of having the condition. (www.families.com) A child is at an even higher risk of having ADHD if they have an identical twin with the condition. This increases their chances of developing ADHD by 80 to 90% (www.families.com) .this information accepts my hypothesis.
Another reason people can suffer from ADHD is due to brain disfunctions. Research shows that the way the brain works in people with ADHD differs from that of people who do not suffer from the condition. It is thought chemicals in the brain that carry and transport messages (known as neurotransmitters) do not function properly in people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (www.nhs.uk)
A further cause of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is the exposure to toxins during pregnancy. Woman who drink alcohol and inhale substances such as smoking and drug abuse during pregnancy are more likely to have a child that suffers from ADHD than if they did not carry out these actions.
