Cyclops: Journal Analysis
For the first week of our journal, we evaluated in class two comic essays from David Sedaris, Drama Bug and Cyclops.
Cyclops was by far my favorite essay because the author reflects of a comedic part of his past and proves how parents are too worried sometimes. This essay basically reminded me of my parents. When Sedaris’ sister stabs him in the eye with a pencil, I instantly felt a feeling of deja-vu. In other words, I too have been in a similar situation. When I was around 8, my younger brother and his friends were throwing rocks at trees for the fun. When I decided to join in, I picked up the biggest rock I could find and threw it towards the tree. To my biggest surprise, I underestimated the weight of the rock and it struck my brother

I think my strongest essay is Rhetorical analysis essay about Tobias Wolff’s “Bullet in the brain.” I spent so much time on the assignment and introduction is good. I think the introduction is one of important part of the essay. Because the introduction grab reader’s attention and make them to read more. I had to follow the instruction given by the professor. I stated my specific topic and I wrote about one topic in my whole assignment. I read the book over and over again, and I analyzed the book from a certain point of view like a book critic. My work was well organized into paragraphs. Each paragraph focused of a single part. Also, I used transitions to help my assignment flow more smoothly.…

The essay I choose to write about was Maya Angelou’s “Sister Flowers”. I believe that the purpose of this essay was to describe an important part of this person’s life that helped them to become a better writer/poet/reader and also describe what I think to be this persons mentor. This essay talks about how Mrs. Bertha Flowers decides to take Marguerite Henderson home with her to give her good books to read and to read her an excerpt form a book. I think it is a very well written and extremely descriptive essay, it makes you feel like you are there with them listening to the pages turning and almost taste the tea cookie or smell the vanilla from Mrs. Flower’s home.…

The essay that I chose was Technoshamanism: Spiritual healing in the rave subculture. This essay was about how raves can be a spiritual experience to certain people. I thought that his article was very interesting as I am an anthropology student. I thought it was nice that he brought in other anthropologists that are experts in Shamanism to help him with this essay. The basic idea of this essay is that the main reason that people go to raves is because, these people that go to these raves believes that they have some sort of spiritual experience. I thought it was interesting how one man was recorded saying that when he went to a rave he became a puma and then an eagle. Much like the author was saying it is as if they are trying to emulate ancient tribal cultures like the Bushmen in Africa. The DJ acts as a Shaman, while the music acts as the drum beats that are used in rituals with the Bushmen in Africa. While, a lot of the spiritual encounters take place at Raves, are helped along with the drug called ecstasy, taking said drug is completely optional, and is not needed for a spiritual encounter to happen.…

In my first essay, I wrote a rhetorical analysis The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This essay was created to interpret that the American Dream can never truly be achieved no matter what you may have or do. While writing this essay I choose this novel because not only have I read the piece, but I found it interesting enough to analysis especially when it came to the American Dream concept. While writing this piece I took a risk and wrote on a whole novel instead of a smaller piece which would have been a greater opinion. The reason I choose this was not only because I loved the book, but I wanted to see how I would have done analysis this novel and testing my writing skills. In this essay, I took on the challenge and while I believed…

During my English comp summer session class, I was instructed to read several essays and give my feedback on them. In my opinion, the last three writings were probably the most memorable and important. “Hurricane Katrina”, a story on the immediate and after affects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, was first of these three stories. It focused on real life experiences of people who lived through it, victims giving their heartrending testimonies. “It’s Not Just A Bike”, is about Lacey Taylor and her tireless pursuit in her cause to help bring to a halt thieves stealing bikes from off her school campus. Another story I read was “Free The Children”. It gave constructive criticism to parents who would not generally let their children enjoy their summers out of school. These three compositions were the most significant and interesting to read.…

Essay writing was a major part of the class. We wrote essay on race and ethnicity, gay matters, language technique essays. Each essay taught us about a different style or form of writing. Comparison and contrast essays taught us how to write an essay comparing two similar things. This type of essay was my favorite to write. In my essay I compared the careers of Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. The most difficult essay for me to write was the argument essay in which we were to defend a point using strong argument skills. For my argument essay I supported the argument that rap music is music of resistance. I can honestly say my essay skills have improved tremendously over the course of this year thanks to the many skills learned in this class.…
