A Cyberspace Community
Most people view a community as the people that surround them daily and live in the same area as them. However, others may see a different aspect of the meaning. The definition of a community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share the same government and often have a common cultural and historical heritage (dictionary.com). Although this may be an accurate definition, it varies from other peoples ideals.
To some a community can be found in rural, urban or even an online setting. A community does not always have to be developed in a geographical landscape. In fact, with the invention of the internet many communities have been established in the virtual world. Regardless of physical location, you can be in the same community with one another by sharing the same social and academic beliefs. You most often affiliate yourself with those of the same values, beliefs, and morals as yourself. In an online community you have the option of exploring the web to find others with your same interests. These people you will most likely consider a part of your community despite their area of location.
A social group sharing the same interests and common characteristics usually pulls away from the larger scaled society and joins a smaller community where they can express their views more openly. Obscenity is often described as an offensive expression of images, actions or words that create a form of sexual nature for or toward an individual. For example one in a rural community may describe their idea of obscene material differently than one in the online community. A family living in a rural area with a higher set of morals would not appreciate a porn store in their downtown square, whereas in a small urban college town it may be more acceptable.
