Cultural Competency And Diversity In The Workplace
- A positive workplace which includes cultural safety and professional positive relationships can be ensured by trust, understanding and sharing.
Aboriginal workers need to gain trust. Non-Aboriginal staff members have to show them that their culture is respected and that they would be happy to learn more about their culture. This motivates Aboriginal staff members to participate.
Tolerance for diversity and a shared understanding of cultural safety should be reflected in professional practices; including the Code of Ethics, the policies and procedures and the National Quality Standards and National Quality Regulations.
If cultural competency and diversity are included in the workplace staff members can learn and benefit from each other

The cumulative diversity within the healthcare workforce itself has received much less attention; yet without attending to increasing diversity in both groups, it is doubtful that efforts to improve cultural competence will be successful. The importance of cultural competency when working with diverse populations in health care can affect a patients or clients overall health in a positive or negative way and also affect reputation of the doctor and the staff. In the article Cultural Competency: Values, Traditions and Effective Practices, by Carol Brannon she defines Cultural competency, as “the ability to understand and respond effectively to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients or clients”(p.2). Brannon also explains how the US is more of a “salad bowl” comparing it’s diversity to the unique ingredients of a salad rather than a “melting pot”, which demonstrates how people have different needs and requisite different kinds of treatment according to their cultures, beliefs, values, habits, etc. Being able to communicate in a positive manner and connect with patients can lead to healthier lifestyles, promote more positive attitudes towards diversity and develop policies that can benefit everyone.…

Have you ever stopped and viewed the world around you ? The world is so mysterious and unique. We live in a diverse population with people of all different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and spiritualities. Max De Pree, an American businessman and writer, once said “ We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.” Diversity is the understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. I believe that people fear diversity because they fear what they do not know. In the NASW standards and ethics it states:…

We as part of the health care team need to understand all cultures in order to provide holistic Nursing care. Being culture competent is more than just knowing what each culture traditional norms are, it is knowing one’s own beliefs and values and being able to put these aside when providing care. Since each culture and religion perceives diseases, treatments and value of life differently we as nurses need to make sure our care is delivered around these. By tailoring when possible our interventions to respect their culture we also help to gain their trust. Example of this can be ensuring we give the patient who is Muslim his medications first so he can pray on time we show him respect for his religion and him.…

I have lived in group housing that taught me valuable lessons in dealing with those who have different ideas and values than me, and found that if I allow myself to be open and receptive, I can see where others’ perspectives originate, and find something worthwhile in other’s disputes.
