Cruel World of Growing Up

Working a job is not an easy thing to do. “Can I Get You Some Manners with That” by Christie Scotty is great article because it gives people insight to the working environment. Scotty explains how people are treated and judged where they work. People may judge others by their occupation. In addition to judgment, people can be treated unfairly because of where they work. Adding to being treated poorly, jobs can also be a struggle for some people. I believe all college freshman should be required to read “Can I Get You Some Manners with That” by Christie Scotty because students should know about the environment of working.
Scotty explains the struggles of working and college freshman should be aware those struggles. A student may have to find a job to pay off his or her college expenses, pay for car, food and living expense. Although work a job is a great option or may be the only option for students to take, working can be a struggle. Scotty indicates working is not easy at all times. People have to deal with their coworkers, rude customers, their supervisor and even upper management. Scotty had to deal with these struggles working as a waitress and a journalist. Scotty realized this while working and students should also realize this by reading her essay. Scotty working two completely different jobs illustrates that it is possible to receive the same harsh treatment.
Sometimes those struggles can be major or they can be minor, a person can never truly know if they will occur or know how to handle them. Students who will be looking for a job should be aware and prepared of the struggles of work environment. Working a particular job can determine how people treat an individual. Working certain jobs, people can be subjected to mistreatment in the work environment. For example, Scotty shows in her article while working as a waitress that a person can and or may be mistreated. Scotty working as a waitress was awful every now and then, the treatment she received from customers was disrespect and treated like she was not a human being. Scotty had a time while working as a waitress that was unforgettable, “One night a man talking on his cell phone waved me away, then beckoned me back with his finger a minute later, complaining he was ready to order and asking where I’d been,” Scotty was appalled by how she was treated. This treatment can occur with certain jobs and students need to know as freshmen that they can be treated this same way if they choose to get a job in a customer service industry. Some students may have a really hard time dealing cruel treatment and if college freshmen read Scotty’s essay then they can be aware of what may come and they can potential avoid it or deal with it in a professional manner. Treatment can be harmful physically, mentally, and emotionally and students who read Scotty’s essay will know what they are getting in to before they work. Scotty explains the harsh judgment a person can receive and students need to be aware of being judged. As Scotty says, “ I long ago realized my profession is a gauge to see how smart or talented I am,” people will judge a person immediately. Students being judged can really hurt their self-esteem. Freshmen who graduate have already being judged and certain occupations will have higher value in society’s view. Freshmen required to read her essay would be able to make better choice on what profession would best suit them. It should be mandatory that students read Scotty’s essay “Can I Get You Some Manners with That”. Scotty exhibits what a job can possibly be like and students need to know what she experienced. Students need to know that they can be treated poorly, being judged, and the struggles that come with working a job or jobs. College freshmen will be aware may come and with that, students can better prepare themselves for what may happen. Knowing what Scotty demonstrates throughout her essay students who get a job will be more able to make a wise decision. The student can equipped themselves for a job they may not want but will have to accept. Scotty’s essay is a great paper to read for college students because there is a big possibility that students will get jobs in college. In the real world most of us will have to work, hopefully in a job that we like to live a comfortable and not pay check to pay check. Scotty’s gives information of the working world, the good and the bad, and this is great for college students because they can know the negatives and positive of working. Scotty’s essay will open the college student’s eyes to the world of the working and this is informative because almost every student will need a job. Scotty illustrates the life of having multiple jobs, the good and bad. This should be a mandatory read for college students because college students will have a better understanding of how people behave the real work environment.
