Innovation, in the business sense of the word, can be defined as the act of introducing a new product or service. Creativity is the cornerstone to innovation; in order to be innovative, one must be creative. In its simplest form, creativity is the propensity to develop or recognize new ideas or alternatives. According to Von Stamm (2008), “creativity is an essential building block for innovation” (pg. 1). Von Stamm (2008) also claims that, “Often ‘creativity’ and ‘innovation’ are used interchangeably.” (pg. 1). While creativity is an essential part of innovation, creativity and innovation are different.…

The American education system is considered by many to be broken and underperforming when compared to the rest of the world (Zhao). Many political leaders and business tycoons would have us believe that the American education system is obsolete and in crisis. “American teachers are complacent, unmotivated, and ill-prepared, while teachers in other countries are of ‘higher cognitive ability,’ better prepared, and held to more rigorous accountability standards” (Zhao).…

    Creativity In America

I am writing today to discuss the slow depletion of creativity from the coming generations of young Americans. In a report made by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, a creativity test administered to millions of people showed a grave decline in their creativity scores as years progressed. The largest decline being in the demographic of children between kindergarten and sixth grade. Numbers don’t lie, and outlined in the publication there’s no doubt the ability to create for our nation’s youth has declined. Of course many things can contribute to such an obscure problem. However, I believe faults in our school system bear much of the blame for the students shortcomings. As a result, it is necessary for some preventative action to be in place to prevent an outbreak from becoming an epidemic.…

In 1915 a controversial poem titled “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was released by T.S. Eliot. It is a first person stream of consciousness narrative based on a man at a social gathering who is having some social anxiety. This character is an examination of the tortured psyche of the prototypical modern man; an overeducated, eloquent, neurotic, and emotionally stilted figure. The main character Alfred speaks about his love for the women of the party and talks about them in high regard but he is much too afraid to dare to have lived life. He effectively wrote a poem representing the typical modern man by incorporating the inner thoughts of Alfred as well as many rhetorical devices explaining why he does not feel confident in his ability to interact. Beyond the skin of the poem T.S. Eliot also incorporated elements of what one would presume were his emotions during the time period in his life while writing the poem. He wrote this poem in such a way that effectively portraits how deeply inside humans are all scared of life and are therefore constantly bored of life.…

What is creativity and what is Entrepreneurship? Is there any relation between creativity and Entrepreneurship? If so, what is the relation and what role does creativity play in entrepreneurship? The purpose of this essay is to articulate the relationship between Creativity and Entrepreneurship, to discuss the implications of creativity on the following entrepreneurial activities – decision making, business planning and opportunity development. Creativity can be defined as the production of novel and useful ideas in any domain (Stein, 1974; Woodman, Sawyer & Griffin, 1993). Creativity and innovation cannot be separated from entrepreneurship which in turn is the process of creating, exploiting and developing an opportunity. Millard, Pretorius and Kruger (2005) mention that “creativity is clearly part and parcel of the entrepreneurial skills and is required to successfully start a venture” (p. 56). Entrepreneurs and their ventures are considered to be “important agents of innovation” (Bosma & Harding, 2007, p. 16), not simply in terms of the products and services they provide, but also in terms of the technologies and processes that they utilise (Bosma & Harding; Watson et al., 1998). Entrepreneurs can be called as essence of creativity and innovation because of their nature. They nurture creativity and innovation. It can be argued that creativity is an important ingredient in the recipe for the new product or service any entrepreneur would provide and it is not only essential creating or developing the new product but also in every level of every type of the organization. Creativity is seen as going beyond new products, new services and new and improved processes (Cook, 1998; Heye, 2006).…
