Creative Writing: Under The Rug
Under the Rug

I was unpacking my toothbrush in the bathroom when my daughter yelled, “Dad get over here! NOW.” I hurried over to see her looking at her phone. I read what she was looking at and I completely regretted buying this house. I should have known by the broken windows and the weeds that covered the fence and door.

When I read the document on her phone I wanted to hurl, and I had to leave as soon as possible. The document said that back in the late 1700s our earliest relatives lived here. They had a maid named Amanda and she was brutally tortured and hung in the basement because she was not able to cater their party. They figured out that she was sleeping during her job, and tortured her. As soon as I was done reading I heard a,

I looked up and did not want to go down there so I stayed. I thought of an idea and I wrote in this journal. You are reading it right now.

I guess I fell asleep because I woke up in the middle of the night to my daughter talking and the basement light on. I went down to the basement and saw Frita playing with Amanda the dead girl. I could not believe my eyes as I saw them, they were like best friends. I was confused.

The next day I went down into the basement and put a microphone so I could hear what they were saying. When I went over what I got at the end of the day I was scared. In the recording Amanda said, “Your father is torturing me, kill him and hang him like he was gonna do to me.”

As I looked out the window, a tear shed from my eye. I heard a knock on the door and thought if Frita had ordered something. I got up and looked through the peephole, it was the mailman as I thought. I heard the old house creak as I opened the door and I said, “What now

I might have helped by killing my father, but those last words. I am with Amanda right now and we have been planning on her going to our closest diner with Tod. Tod is the mailman he has a very big crush on Amanda. Since Amanda is not alive we will make her look as beautiful as our handcrafted vase.

We are in my room and we have found a place to hide my peasant father’s body. We hid him in the basement where there was a shelf. Gosh he or it smelled horrible. I was going upstairs when I noticed Amanda. I thought she was following me but ignored it.

I got upstairs and grabbed my favorite dress, and a butt load of makeup to cover her scars for her date with Tod. I did not know her plan, but what was going to come soon, I have to say, “At least I survived.”

As we all know, Amanda is a ghost, she is a unalive girl who died, but what I think of all the time is when we told her my last name she said I will get back at you. I did not understand what she meant, but now I know.

I got back down and saw her staring at my Father’s body, I thought it was weird so I told her to stop. She looked back at me and said, “ Do you want to be with your

Your wife, sir, was I believe my favourite victim. I'm writing to you from a dim, foul-odored, cramped cell. The walls are leaky and covered in mildew. Unlike your bedroom of course. How hard was it to get Meredith’s blood and other stains off of your walls? She deserved every single lash, kick, and stab that she received. I never got to get a glimpse of the autopsy photographs. And I am aware that her left finger & kidney were missing. They were delicious and go well with risotto. I have a few months left until they inject me. Sending me home to my father, Satan. I have left…

world. As a child, I spent many weekends at my grandparents’ apartment in Brooklyn. Space there was limited, and all of the family keepsakes—including my aunt’s and my mother’s books, trinkets, souvenirs, and photographs—were stored in a kitchen closet, set high, just below the ceiling. I could reach this cache only by standing on the kitchen table that I moved in front of the closet. This I had been given permission to do, and this is what I did, from age six to age thirteen or fourteen, over and over, weekend after weekend. I would climb onto the table in the kitchen and take down every book, every box. The rules were that I was allowed to look at anything in the closet, but I was always to put it back. The closet seemed to me of infinite dimensions, infinite depth. Each object I found in the closet—every keychain, postcard, unpaired earring, high school textbook with its marginalia, some of it my mother’s, some of it my aunt’s—signaled a new understanding of who they were and what they might be interested in; every photograph of my mother on a date or at a dance became a clue to my possible identity. My biological father had been an absent figure since I was two. My mother had left him. We never spoke about him. It was taboo to raise the subject. I did not feel permitted to even think about the subject. My aunt shared the small apartment with my grandmother and grandfather, and sometimes one of them would come into the kitchen to watch me at my investigations. At the time I didn’t know what I was looking for. I think they did. I was looking, without awareness,…

But Amanda stayed calm and said to the ghost, “Who are you.” ( as she peered in the giant house seeing about twenty ghosts) and the ghost said softly, “I am Severous, the leader of the ghosts.” Severous was a long white ghost, with glittering eyes and spoke as softly as velvet. Amanda wondered why she was so scared before and why her friends were so afraid. Suddenly Mr. Barley came to the door and yelled, “WHY ARE YOU HERE!” and Severous flew away.
