I gave her the finest doctors, and the whole time she was in the hospital it cost me over $17.00 a day. I didn't care what it cost, as long as I could save

The K’iche’ (Quiché) Maya had an advanced civilization in pre-Columbian times with a high level of political and social organization. Archaeological findings have shown large populations centers and a complex class structure. While the early Mayan people did not have an exact written language the fact of oral tradition has left historians to be lucky enough to have later writers to preserve the stories. The written records and oral traditions are preserved in the sacred book of the Maya known as the Popol Vuh; written in the native K’iche’ language after the conquest of the Spanish in 1524. This now lost manuscript was later recorded in the seventeenth century by Father Francisco Ximénez. The sacred book of the Maya, the Popol Vuh, is a rare survivor from the Spanish invasion, and explains the mythology, traditions, creations, and the history of the K’iche’ themselves.…

In the short story "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara, a group of African-American children from the projects of New York are confronted with social class differences for the first time during a trip to F.A.O. Schwartz. Thomas Cassidy, author of an article in Critical Survey of Short Fiction, describes that the short story is “structured in an oral form that allows for meaningful side issues with the aim of being clear the central point to her audience” (Bambara 652). One can learn right away that Sylvia, the story 's narrator, is not fond of Miss Moore and could care less about the trip to the toy store. Bambara illustrates this by the tone and language of Sylvia 's narration. Her use of slang and curse words clearly indicates where she has grown up and her dislike of Miss Moore. She even conjures up a plan “to jump out at the next light and run off to the first bar-b-que we can find” (Bambara 653). It is kind of ironic that Sylvia feels this way, considering this trip had the most dramatic impact on her as she learns a powerful lesson. Miss…

I sat in the bathroom and clicked the pause button. Stopping myself, I went outside and slowly gathered my thoughts, or what was left of them. I was just the ripe age of nine but for that day, I felt like I had more knowledge than the average person over the age of forty. Every rule and barrier and been deconstructed and thrown in a blender only to be pieced back into a new form almost alien-like. Everything that I was ever taught up until that date was void, mixed-up, and plain wrong. I hated it. But being my morbidly curious self, I went back in the bathroom and pressed play, hoping that maybe I heard something different. Maybe I was just going insane. Nothing changed. The same cacophonous sounds still shattered not only my ears but my thinking.…

Essay On A Trip To Maya

I recently took a trip back to a trip to the Maya empire during the year 600, the height if their empire, from the October 9th to October 11th, a three day weekend. While visiting the Maya I was amazed by the fascinating scene that greeted me, their architecture is by far the most I seen since on my travels. I stood and admired their society as in its daily life. The Maya’s empire extended as far as the eye could see in all directions. Upon my return I found that their empire went from present day southeastern Mexico and across modern day Guatemala. During my three day stay I was able to experience their food, culture, religion, daily life, and much more.…
