Crash (2004)
Plot and Structure:
Crash takes place in a modern day Los Angeles in the time span of approximately 36 hours. The plot of the movie is told between multiple characters, all of which are of different class and backgrounds but all share prejudice towards people who aren’t of the same race. All of the events unfolding are in chronological and sometimes simultaneous order. The movie begins with one of our main characters, Detective Graham Waters (Don Cheadle) Waters and his partner/girlfriend Ria (Jennifer Esposito) reacting to a literal car crash. An asian woman who can barely speak English tries to explain the situation and Ria scoffs at her for not even being able to speak correct English. This plays to a subtle stereotype that asians can’t drive. This same asian woman is seen hitting another character at the end of the movie.
One day prior, Farhad (Shaun Toub) and his daughter Dorri (Bahar Soomekh) are seen buying a gun from a local gunshop. He gets into an argument with the owner and he is asked to leave. Dorri purchases the gun from him and gets a box of bullets to go with it. In another place that same night, the Cabots are out in a nice part of town when they are carjacked by Anthony (Chris Bridges) and Peter (Larenz Tate) who drive off in their Lincoln Navigator. This establishes that Anthony and Peter are the stereotypical black gang members/criminals which is another stereotype.
Later when they return home, Jean (Sandra Bullock) asks Rick (Brendan Frazier) to have the locks changed again, even after Luiz (Michael Pena) has already changed the because she believes that he will sell their key to someone. This establishes her fear and frustration with Blacks and Latinos as well as establishes Rick’s fear of losing popularity as the district attorney.
In another part of the city, LAPD officers John Ryan (Matt Dillon) and Tom Hansen (Ryan Phillipe) pull over a Navigator, with the Thayers in it. John proceeds to pat them down and in the process

The couple are driving a car that matches the description of the stolen car shown one scene earlier, but the license plate, nor the description of the couple match the stolen vehicle’s perpetrators. Now that Alan and Joey are stuck there they need to come up with a new plan, How to escape. During this process the robbers have to deal with Zach and his “big mouth” according to Joey. Farhad was a store owner that relied on the store financially. The store he ran was all he had besides his wife and daughter. He decides to buy a gun at the beginning of the film to protect the store after it had been broken into. His daughter protests, begging him not to buy the gun but he explains, “That man would have killed your mother. You think I should let crazy people do what they want to us” (Haggis)? His wife was present at the time of the robbery and he felt he needed to protect his family as well as the store. After the break in, Farhad got Daniel Ruiz, the locksmith, to replace the lock on the already broken door. Ruiz did his job and left the store after arguing with farhad about the lock that he fixed. Farhad accuses Ruiz of trying to scam him and says, “he cheat me; you try to cheat me right” (Haggis)? Soon after, the store is completely destroyed and vandalized. The insurance company does not cover any of the damages due to the fact that Ruiz already fixed the lock. It was not the lock that granted access for the burglary, it was the broken door. Since Ruiz already tried to explain this to Farhad prior to the breakin, the insurance company owes him nothing. Farhad is enraged and tracks down Ruiz and gets his information. He goes to Ruiz’s house, armed with the gun, with the intent of killing him. He arrives at Ruiz’s house and pulls a gun n him and demands the money he owes…

While in the bar two Russians are introduced into the movie. This displays the two main sources of evil that the McManus brothers will be fighting. A fight ensues and the Russians are left badly beaten. The following scene starts with Paul Smecker (William Dafoe) of the FBI at a crime scene where the two Russians are dead. He states how the neighborhood is predominately Irish and is surprised someone called in the murders. This goes to show the type of society in South Boston; the fact that the people overlook these types of situations because either they are used to violence or do not care for Russians.…
