Colgate-Palmolive has been researching and developing a superior toothbrush, the Colgate Precision, and as the Precision Product Manager I have overseen the development of the Precision from start to finish. We have been developing a technical innovation in the toothbrush industry, and with the product’s launch pending there have been several factors yet to be decided upon. With a tremendous amount of resources pooled into the development of the Precision and the recent competitive market we are launching it in, it is essential the positioning and branding of this toothbrush are executed properly. The Precision, if done successfully, should stand out as a technological breakthrough to consumers and limit cannibalization of current Colgate brand toothbrushes. Another key issue that is at play for the business is whether the Colgate Plus brand will be cannibalized following the introduction of our new toothbrush. Through analysis of the marketing mix for the Precision toothbrush, and weighing the financial benefits and costs relative to the two positioning strategies, I will address the correct course of action for the Precision toothbrush to sustain a competitive advantage in the market.…

Colgate now has some tough decision facing them because of this Wisp product. One decision the company has is how to market this new product in a way that will not affect the sales of their toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash products. The Wisp actually takes the place of these three money making items. The next decision is how to find the right price for this item. The company decided on $2.39 for a four pack of wisp and $7.99 for a sixteen pack. The question is, is it cheaper for a customer to buy a regular toothbrush and toothpaste and just keep them with them at the office, in the car or in their purse than to buy the Wisp. One has to admit they would get more uses out of the regular products for the money. This makes marketing this new Wisp product very important actually critical to the success of the product.…

Consumers first purchased toothbrushes without much knowledge or information concerning the product’s benefits. As new product development increased, and consumers became better informed about the benefits of toothbrushes, they began to focus their interest not only on cavity prevention, but also on the health of their gums, their oral hygiene, and their cosmetic appearance. Because consumer interest and toothbrush purchases began to increase, advertising and promotion also began to increase, which lead to the development and addition of the super-premium product class (McCarthy, 2002). Consumers began to purchase toothbrushes based on the specific benefits each toothbrush and company had to offer.…
