OUTLINE
Procrastination is a serious problem for college students. Discuss the statement and identify at least four strategies for overcoming procrastination.

Thesis Statement: Procrastination is a serious problem for college students because their grades will not be outstanding and they may develop unhealthy lifestyles.
I. Grades may not be outstanding:
A. Students may fail their test and assignments(poor work produced)
B. Students may not hand in their assignments on time
C. Their GPA will be low
II. Unhealthy Lifestyles:
A. Sleepless Nights
B. Insufficient time to eat proper and balanced meals
C. They may develop stress over time.

Many psychologists claim that many college students procrastinate. Procrastination is the delaying or postponing of a task. Procrastination is a serious problem for college students because they may not excel academically and students may develop unhealthy habits. If students procrastinate, they may not excel academically because students may complete their assignments or study for test in a very short period of time thus they will not be efficient and the work produced may be poor and not satisfactory. Also they may not present assignments to lecturers on time and they may be penalized and all this can affect their grades causing it to be low and unsatisfactory and even cause them to fail their courses. Furthermore, if their grades are low then it means that overall their GPA will be low and so their parents may find it as a waste to finance their student’s education if they are failing. Also if students procrastinate, they may eventually develop unhealthy lifestyles. Since students try to complete task such as assignments and studying in limited time, they may have to spend all night trying to complete them and so they may lack sleep. Therefore students will not be able to concentrate the next day at school as well as they may be very grumpy, tired and easily irritated.

Procrastination is one of the biggest reasons that a student does not have good academic success. Procrastination is defined as putting a certain task off until a certain deadline arrives. Such as, if a student has to have a report or speech done by a certain date and has known for three weeks but delays in getting it done until the day before it is due. Doing this usually results in a bad grade for that paper, which could bring the student’s overall grade down to not passing. In my own experience with this problem, I have found it is easier to just do the work after you find out it is due rather than waiting until the last day. Such as, I had a buddy in high school that would hear about the assignment and would delay in getting it done till the day it was due. Yet, he would complain that he never had enough time to do the work required to complete the assignment.…

Ellis and Knaus (1977) estimated 95% of American college students procrastinate. Solomon and Rothblum (1984) through self reports discovered 46% of students admit to procrastinating, and 50% of those people reported it as a mild to severe problem. The prevalence of academic procrastination is varied from study to study, but it is unanimous that academic procrastination is a problem that must be addressed. Some of the consequences of academic procrastination are external, decreased progress/learning (Rabin et al., 2011), and increased health risk (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). Some of the consequences are internal such as depression, irrational cognitions, lower self esteem, and anxiety (Solomon & Rothblum, 1984). There are many negative aspects of academic procrastination. As stated earlier procrastination strikes deep into every aspect of daily life, it is a problem that cannot be solved by just looking at the individual. In Van Eerde’s (2003) meta-analysis on the networks of procrastination he stressed the importance of examining the social influences on the students. Academic procrastination is a well sought out field of study due to the many factors that produce and maintain it, this paper will look at two; Self-regulation and the socio-personal variables that surround…
