Contemporary rise in female representation in Greek and UK Parliaments SYRIZA hold 71 seats in Greek Parliament, which is over 20% of the total 300 seats, and became the official Greek opposition party as of 2012. SYRIZA is a coalition of the radical left including eurocommunist organisations from this I have parsimoniously (due to the word limit) theorised that Greece stands as a less liberal country than the UK, reflected in the data displayed in my graph. My graph illustrates the rise in female representation in the respective parliaments of the two case studies, which is that not only did the UK appear to be more representative in the early 90s but also representativeness rose at a far quicker rate – by 1997 women represented a higher percentage of the UK Parliament than that of the Greek Government following the 2009 election. 1997 saw the beginning of Blair’s premiership, along with the colloquially dubbed ‘Blair’s Babes’, starting a chain of media catchphrases for the female support of Prime Ministerial candidates continued with others such as ‘Millie’s Fillies’. These paradoxically derogatory titles document the increase of female representation, more so than that of the Greek government.
