Conflict In The House On Mango Street
The biggest decision people make is deciding who they are. In the story The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the author creates a conflict of Esperanza’s internal struggle to find her identity, reminding us that the decision of who you are can be life or death. We first learn about this conflict when Esperanza is talking about her name, and how it doesn’t present her as who she is. Throughout the story, Esperanza realizes that people judge her due to the fact that she only shows them the negative aspects of her life. This helps her decide to change herself, which will ultimately change her future. In the chapter “Beautiful and Cruel” Esperanza says "I have decided not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain"(88). Here is where she decides who she is and who she wants to be. An example of her dynamic change is when Esperanza says “one with red red lips” (89). This example shows that the woman Esperanza wants to be has a personality and stands out. The adjective “red” is what clues us into this. The reader knows that unlike before when she said she was “a muddy color” she wants people to look at her and see the person she is inside. If she does want people to see her, we can infer that she does like herself. This conflict has a major impact on how Esperanza lives her life. In the beginning of the book Esperanza says “I would like to baptize myself under a new name.”(11). Here Esperanza is trying to define herself. After a while she does decide to write her own story and not follow the rules of society. By choosing the kind of person she wants to be Esperanza is able to accomplish her dreams. She becomes a writer and has the house she has always dreamed of. Over the course of the book Esperanza not only determines but becomes the person she needs to be in order to live her
