The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, is a growing up female novel written in the style of linked prose poems. The book displays the hardships of growing up as a Chicana while being surrounded by the pressure of the American dream. The main character Esperanza has trouble with her identity, but learns a lot of important lessons from the people around her as she matures. The struggles she faces are what creates her main quest of using her legacy to take control of her destiny. Esperanza sets herself many goals throughout her journey, and meets people who both help and hurt her, and eventually lead her to change her goals and overall outlook on life. The Three Sisters tell Esperanza that even when she’s moved onto a new destiny, she must always return to Mago Street and appreciate that this was the place that shaped her new life. When told this, Esperanza “didn’t know what to say, It was as if she could read [her] mind, as if she knew what [Esperanza] had wished for, and [she] felt ashamed for having made such a selfish wish” (105). The Three Sisters are one of the most important guide figures in the whole novel, because they encourage Esperanza and lead her to recognize that her main goal of leaving and feeling like she didn’t belong on Mango Street, was really a false quest. The novel The House on Mango Street, is a story regarding the troubles Esperanza must face when trying to use her legacy in an effective way for her destiny. Throughout the book, characters are introduced to the readers, some of whom help and some of whom hurt Esperanza along the way. But fortunately, in the end, Esperanza is successful in her quest of undergoing a destiny that doesn’t involve being a fancy chandelier. The major lesson this book instills in the reader, is as life proceeds always look back on where everything started, and value the experiences that shaped ones life
