Assignment 2; Essay-Little Albert and Classical Conditioning

The initial pairing of the banging bar in terms of the rat are as follows, ““Two months after pretesting, Albert was shown a white rat, and anytime Albert touched the rat, he was exposed to the sound of the hammer hitting a steel bar. After seven trials, Albert cried and demonstrated avoidance on presentation of the rat—the conditioned stimulus—in the absence of the loud noise”. (Watson J.B., 1920) Albert had started to associate the white rat (original neutral stimulus, which is not the conditioned stimulus) with the loud noise (unconditioned stimulus) and was producing fearful or emotional response of crying. The experiments progress report results was that introduction of the loud sound (US) resulted in fear, a natural response. Introduction of a rat (neutral stimulus) paired with the loud sound (US) resulted in fear. Finally successive introduction of the rat (CS) resulted in fear (CR) and learning was demonstrated in this experiment.

    Leading on from this, Thorndike (1911) described ‘the law of effect’, suggesting that behaviour is more likely to be repeated if it produces a favourable response to the environment. He demonstrated this by conducting an experiment by which a cat was placed within a box. The cat could escape from the box by pressing a lever; once the cat discovered this, the cat was quicker to elicit the response and escape to a favourable environment. In 1913, Watson defined behaviourism as a science which focused on the nature of behaviour, with no scientific experimentation related to introspective stimuli. Watson’s methodological behaviourism focused on experiments where environmental stimulus elicited a response. He concluded that there was “no dividing line between the man and the brute” (Watson, 1913), rejecting the idea of the private behaviour. Jones (1915) agreed with Watson, stating that psychology needed to focus on observable phenomena in order to be considered a science, and “turn its back on all private data”.     Over the past few days, I classical conditioned a pet and I made sure that what I was doing was very safe and not harmful to the pet in any way. The pet that I classical conditioned was my friend’s guinea pig and my goal was for the guinea pig to form an association between receiving food and the banging of the cabinet door where the guinea pig’s food is stored by its cage. First, I just gave the guinea pig food like he usually gets. The normal response of the guinea pig was to go and eat the food and that is what he did. After that, I just slammed the cabinet shut where the food is stored and I did not give the guinea pig any food. After that, I gave the guinea pig food and at the same time that I gave the guinea pig food, I also slammed the cabinet door shut. I repeated this many times so that the guinea pig got used to hearing the cabinet shut when he got food. After awhile, I just started to close the cabinet door loudly and when I did this, I noticed that the guinea pig went to his food dish and began looking for food even though there was no food in the dish. This took many trials, but I did get it to work a few times in the end. In this example, there are examples of a UCS, UCR, NS, CS, and CR. The UCS in this example is the food that the guinea pig always eats, the UCR is the natural instinct of the guinea pig eating the food when it is given to him, the NS is the slamming of the cabinet door, the CS is the slamming of the cabinet too, and the CR is when the guinea pig looks for food and tried to find it to eat by just hearing the cabinet slam shut. This is one of the strength of this theory as it has the scientific background and knowledge because there has been other scientific study to prove the experiment. Watson used rats in order for his theory while little Albert was used to test phobias and fears, so in this case the theory was useful. On the other hand it could also be a weakness because humans and animals do not behave in the same way as humans are more intelligent and we are also educated about what is around us.
