CHAPTER 1
GUIDE FOR THE PREPARATION OF WRITTEN REPORTS

1.1 INTRODUCTION
These notes have been prepared to aid you in presenting concise, literate and well-organised reports in second year. In third year you will find that the Department 's requirements are very strict and designed to prepare you for your professional career. However, in second year, the main emphasis will be on the mechanical details of the report and on developing ability to present ideas and interpretations of results in a clear and unambiguous manner. REPORTS MUST FOLLOW THE FORMAT DESCRIBED IN THIS
CHAPTER.
1.2 MECHANICAL DETAILS
1. Presentation
All reports must be written neatly in ink, typed, or word-processed, on A4 sized paper. Illegible, careless or untidy work will not be accepted but will be returned for re-writing. Brevity and conciseness are desirable.
The passive construction should be used (e.g. 'The subjects were weighed ' not 'I weighed the subjects ') and the use of colloquialisms and abbreviations (e.g. they 're, can 't, a lot of, etc.) should always be avoided.
However, always use standard abbreviations such as mg, ml, kg etc). Reports should not be in note form, full sentences must be used.
2. Cover
All reports must be stapled on the left-hand side and presented secured inside an A4 cover bearing your name and the title of the report. Please sign the cover sheet provided (p. iv).
3. Margins
A margin of at least 4 cm should be provided on the left hand side of every page.
4. Paging
The pages of the report, including graphs and tables, should be numbered in sequence. Only write on one side of a page.
5. Figures and Tables
All figures (graphs included) and tables should be numbered and bear a title clearly describing the information contained in the figure or table. The title of a figure should be a statement indicating the general relationship the author is illustrating (see Figure 1.1).
