complacency in the workspace
1. Complacency

2. Paying Attention

3. Not being on the phone while on a tank

There are many things in the workplace that can be repetitive and that can cause you to be complacent. Being complacent can cause you to lack attention to detail in the simplest areas. Now being complacent and not paying attention are both reasons why you should not be on the phone, why you are on a tank, because that can lead to major consequences, if anything were to go wrong, but you would not have been able to notice the problem, if one were to occur, due to your complacency and not paying attention at the exact moment the problem were to arise. Everyone knows the famous quote “complacency kills” and in my case, it really could have happened. Last Friday at the tank ramp, we were doing services on the tanks, in order to make sure the pack, or engine, to the tank works properly. One of the last things we had to do with that tank was to start it up and make sure nothing was messed up with it. Obviously there had to be somebody in the driver’s hole in order to start it up, so I jumped in there and waited until I was told to fire it up. And due to my moment of complacency, I decided to get on my phone, which was not the best given decision at that time. After about five minutes or so, I was told to fire it up and as it was in the process of starting, I continued to play on my phone, once again poor decision making. Then all of a sudden I hear someone in the background yelling, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying, then I hear it again much louder someone saying to kill the tank and at that moment I panicked a little bit. The reason the tank had to be shut down was because once I started it up, there was a big fuel

I woke up tied down to a chair by Tyler Durden. I asked him “What are you going to get by doing all of this Tyler?” He responded by saying “With destruction brings change and your death will be an example for my space monkeys to look up to. It’ll show that I would even die for the completion of Project Mayhem.” The support group and Marla showed up to my rescue, but Tyler was gone. I was untied from the chair and I threw the gun on floor. Realizing that this was all Tyler’s plan to use the support group members and Marla as examples too, I screamed “RUN this building is going to blow any minute.” Everyone was freaking out and I just accepted our fate because there was no time. No explosions went off because Marla realized that Tyler must have used paraffin.…

The Scalar Principle states “authority and responsibility should flow in a direct line vertically from the highest level of the organization to the lowest level” (Starling, p. 300). It can also be identified as the “chain of command”. In most work settings, utilizing the scalar principle is highly emphasized, especially in a military setting because it establishes an organized environment and different levels of authority within individuals. For example, requesting leave of absence can be approved by the first line supervisor because they are directly involved with daily operations. It is highly frowned upon skipping a member of the chain of command because many times issues can be dealt with at a lower level. At the same time, in situations…

My chief said, "You will be finished with all of your qualifications in six months. If you need anything come to me." Then I asked, "What is the deal with the nub thing?" He replied, "Son, if you know what is good for you, you will just grit your teeth and bear it." I thought it best to get started right away, so I grabbed a book and sat in Sonar to study. By the time the ship was out to sea I had already read everything I needed to get my first interview on the hydraulics system. I walked down to the machinery room and talked to the auxiliary division's Leading Petty Officer. He said, "You are getting an early star aren't you." I replied, "I will have my fish within six months." He went forward with the interview and said, "You will do fine if you know this much every time." Later that day I was studying in the Combat Systems Electronics Space when I heard "Fire in the torpedo room. Fire in the vertical launch system". I did not know what to do, so I ran into sonar and the watch section explained that it was just a drill. Then, of course, everyone laughed at me. The Sonar Supervisor explained my responsibilities for casualty response. After the fire drill we had a flooding drill and a hydraulic rupture…

We exchanged stories and caught up since we haven’t seen each other for a while. He then asked where the latrine was, so I pointed him in the direction of our outhouse. He left and about 8 minutes passed when (I want to say Tower 2) a then SPC Cohran, opened fire with the M240B right above me. He’s shouted out the three D’s (Distance, Direction, Description) and since I was closest to him, I echoed from the top running into the facility we all resided in to grab my gear. Chaos ensued as everyone began to head to their battle positions. I woke up my Section Leader and told him what was happening then grabbed my gear and ran toward the Mortar firing position. There were about 3 rounds of indirect 300M or so outside of our base. Our base was pretty small, so I assume it was a difficult target for the enemy. By the time our section made it to the mortar firing position, my section leader was already issuing fire commands for the system. I did my role and grabbed an HE round and stood by for the gunner (Then SPC Gilstrap) to tell me to hang it. With all the adrenaline from the gun positions and anger from PFC Salvador being injured felt a pressure to perform and destroy . All I can think was, “If you take one of ours, we’ll take 100 of yours!” .We dropped two rounds HE for an immediate suppression, but we able to acquire a BDA (Battle Damage Assessment) as the enemy…

We had been ambushed by a large number of entrenched combatants that used mortar rounds and effective machine gun fire to pin down our forces. The Iron Chef and I moved into a parcel of farm land that sat below the enemies view, yet we could hear the snap and feel the wind of the enemy fire whizzing across our heads and shoulders as if there was some sort of lead wall threatening to prostrate us to the ground for eternity. As we began to work our way into a position to effect the enemy combatants, a rocket struck one of our vehicles about two hundred meters to our immediate front, destroying the truck and injuring the occupants, how seriously, we did not know but we had to work our way to their location, provide them cover and get them to…

As I looked down from the helicopter I could see a sea of chaos. I jump out and land on my pedals. I slightly rolled my tarsal but I wasn't gonna let that stop me. As I got closer to the scene my nasal could not take the smell of Pyrodex propellant, and blood. I search the desert wasteland with my orbitals to see if anyone was in need of immediate attention. Then I spotted a wounded soldier, with the weight of medical supplies wrapped around my coxal. I ran towards him in short breaths. But when I get a better view of the extremity of his injuries my muscles tense up and my breathing stops altogether. This was my first day on the job.…

AbstractThere are four major influences that can impact an organization's structure. With the movie Office Space as an example, the way employees handle change, paradigms, power, and politics will be analyzed. Theories will be cited of what techniques can be initiated to ensure effective organizational management and behavior. Office Space is a great example of irrational management and bizarre human behavior. The executives at the fictitious company in the movie, Initech, do not demonstrate successful managerial organizational skills. Great respect is paid to the impact that organizational change can encompass.…

A little over a year ago I was a senior in high school, leaving school with the weekend ahead of me, ready to unwind, and enjoy the night with my friends. On my trip home my mother called me and asked if I could go out of my way to pick my sister up from school; reluctantly, I tell her that I will. Before that call my friends and I had established that I would be driving us to the senior class tailgate before the football game that night. Wanting to get to the tailgate faster, I begin to force my foot on the gas pedal a little more, without thinking about the consequences of my risk. Suddenly, I look back in my rear view mirror and see the dreaded red, blue, and white lights flashing. I look down at my speedometer and realize…

On the bus, after processing, we were sent to our units where we would be training and staying for a very long slow tiring six months. While on the bus, everyone was worried about getting shark attacked. Shark attack is a system drill sergeants use to take control over manipulative soldiers. As we arrived to an oval barn with a white sliding garage door on the front, I thought to myself, “Where am I?” and “How am I going to carry two green duffle bags weighing over fifty pounds down the stairs?” When I went down the stairs I felt as if I was falling off the earth. Once I made it down the stairs very slowly, we had to stand in a perfectly straight line with our bags heal to toe with the person in front and behind me. My nervousness by this time has turned into anxiety. My breathing was rapidly faster and I was sweating anticipating on what was going to happen next. The garage door slid open and all that I saw was white cloudy smoke and circle green brown hats coming out of the smoky clouds. As the drill sergeants were barging toward us like wild boars hungry for food, all I could think and feel was numbness and my heart beating. I didn’t even want to move a…
