From 1936 to 1939, the Spanish Civil War took place. In this said war, General Francisco Franco, strong supporter of nationalism, fought against the Loyalists, in order form a new government system for Spain, a Fascist government. Fascism is an extreme rightist view, more extreme than Monarchism and Nazism. In the Spanish Civil War, Franco was aided by Hitler and the German forces. The nationalists were aided slightly by the newly formed Italian country and their powerful Fascist leader, Mussolini. Although Franco started the Spanish Civil War to rebel against the Second Republic, Franco’s central goal was to destroy the left-wing organizations such as the liberalists, communists, and socialist movements.

“On March 5, 1939, the Republican army, led by the Colonel Segismundo Casado and the politician Julián Besteiro, rose against the prime minister Juan Negrín and formed the National Defense Council to negotiate a peace deal,” (Beevor 391-392). “The Spanish Civil War was between the leftist Republicans, who were in control of the government at the time, and the Nationalists. The right wing Nationalists were led by Franco and his army, who had the support of the Catholic Church,” (Beevor). The Republicans were getting all of their financial and military help from the people of nobility in Spain because the nobles wanted a monarchy so they can keep their position of power. The Loyalists/Republicans were the nobles and people with power in Spain. They were supported by the Soviet Union, Mexico, and France. “The Nationalists, as the rebels were called, received aid from Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The Republicans received aid from the Soviet Union, as well as from International Brigades, composed of volunteers from Europe and the United States” (Encyclopædia Britannica). There were other groups covering the political spectrum from monarchism and conservatism through liberalism and socialism. This includes a small communist group divided between supporters of Joseph Stalin, and his archrival, Leon …show more content…

During the mid 1500s Calvinism was spreading through France. By the late 1500s about 10 percent of the population of France had converted to Calvinism. The Valois monarchs continued to be staunch Catholics and because of support from the Vatican, they showed no sign of wavering. However after Henry II was killed his wife Catherine de’ Medici took over the government. Catherine was a more moderate Catholic and was willing to make compromises with the French Calvinists or Huguenots. The radical Catholics, led by the Guise family, refused to let that happen. In 1562 the Duke of Guise massacred a peaceful congregation of Huguenots. This plunged France into a civil war. In 1572 the fighting was apparently over after a marriage was arranged between the daughter of Catherine de’Medici and Henry of Navarre, the leader of the Huguenots. During the wedding however the Catholics massacred many of the Huguenot leadership, hoping to reinstate Catholicism. The massacre which is now called St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre. During that day and the three that followed 3,000 Huguenots were killed including some leaders.…

Born in December 4th, 1892 the young Spanish general and dictator of Spain ruled from 1939 and became known as the youngest general in Europe in the 1920s. During the general election of 1936 the ruling centre-right coalition collapsed amid the Straperlo corruption scandal and new elections were scheduled. The new coalitions formed were the Popular Front on the left, which ranged from the Republican Union Party to Communists, as well as the Frente Nacional on the right, which ranged from the center radicals to the conservative Carlists. On February 16th, 1936 the Popular Front won by a narrow margin. The days that followed the Popular Front had launched a campaign with the support of the government against Opposition whom they accused of plotting against the Republic. It was seen that Spain was in imminent danger of falling under a “Communist dictatorship”, and therefore it was seen that fighting against the democratically elected Popular Front they, the Opposition were merely doing their duty in defense of law and order and the freedom of the Spanish people.…
