I have chosen to compare JC Penny and Kohl’s. Each of these companies has a unique history and that is where I am going to start my paper so we have an understanding of how they evolved to the companies they are today. This will help me demonstrate how each company uses Facebook in their marketing strategy today.
JC Penney JC Penney was founded by James Cash Penney in Kemmerer Wyoming in 1902. It manly was a store for farmers and miners to get clothing. The first store was established in 1902, the company is 111 years old this year. JC Penney has grown in to a large company that still sells fashionable clothing and housewares to customers. Combing through the history of JC Penney I could not find when they actually launched their social media campaign using Facebook. I do know that Facebook was launched in February of 2004. I found this to be very interesting that the launch of JC Penney on Facebook was not noted in the timeline. JC Penney had the following items on their Facebook page:
56,607 people talking about them at 12:34 pm on Saturday May 25,

Most of what I saw where long term customers who had grown up on JC Penny stating how much they liked the stores. I did see very few responses to customer’s complaints or questions on Facebook. The company also had a list of sponsors on the right that they must be receiving funds for placing ads on their web page.

Kohl’s
Kohl’s was originally founded as a grocery store these stores were opened in 1962. The first stores were in Brookfield Wisconsin. In 1972 they opened the first Kohl’s Department Stores. Kohl’s is only half the age of JC Penney being in business 51 years. I combed through Kohl’s Facebook page and did not see when they launched their Facebook page. Once again I found this to be interesting that they did not show the date of launching Facebook in there timeline.
Kohl’s had the following items on their Facebook page:
