Rogue Waves and Tsunamis

Some waves are as fast as a cheetah and as destructive as a bulldozer. Rogue waves are waves usually found in the deepest parts of the ocean. Tsunamis are waves that usually hit the coastline. Despite having some small similarities and differences, Rogue waves and tsunamis are both just as terrifying. Rogue waves have an appealing look that has many interesting ways to form. To begin with, gigantic waves, also known as “freak waves”, could seem to come out of absolutely nowhere. The text states, “The surrounding sea can appear calm when suddenly a wave as high as 100 feet above the surface comes crashing towards you” (Simmons 58). Additionally, many scientists believe the cause of the mysterious Rogue waves has many different ways they can happen. According to the text, “Many factors affect a wave’s height, including wind strength, ocean depth, ocean currents, and the presence of islands and other obstacles” (Simmons). This section of the text shows that there are many potential ways a rogue wave can form from many obstacles standing in the way, making it a big problem to start. All these ways are why scientists have many theories about how they happen, and people second guess the theories. To sum up this section, rogue waves are confusing waves that have been found to be gigantic and formed by many different small factors. Tsunamis have an interesting look that can be noticed from miles away, while also having a root that will shock you. To start, there are multiple waves that are taller than you could ever imagine. In the text it says, “Tsunamis are large and powerful ocean waves that grow in size as they reach the shore.” (Earth Science For Kids 1) This evidence supports the statement that they are gigantic waves.
