Compare And Contrast Master Cat
“Don’t be upset master just give me a pouch and a pair of boots” This line was spoken by Master cat when he was attempting to reason with his master to show him that he's more than just a cat. Master cat was to help his master gain wealth and the princess by the end of the tale. In the two Trickster tales “Master Cat” and How Stories Came To Earth” there are several ways that both tales use similarities and differences throughout the stories.

During the Trickster tales there are ways the two stories are equivalent to each other. One similarity that is present in the stories is that they both use “Anthropomorphism” by the animals talking and creating plans to get what they want in the stories. Anansi’s Wife gave Anansi ways to capture all the animals in the story. Both of the character qualities are kind of similar in the stories because they both are brave and cunning from capturing dangerous creatures to killing an Ogre. Anansi was brave for capturing animals that he and the readers knew were very dangerous because he was just a tiny spider against a python or a leopard. Next in “Master Cat” the Cat was very brave in threatening to chop the people working on the land into

Like they both had different strategies on getting what they wanted. Also Master Cat was pretty much on his own throughout the story while anansi received help from his wife to capture the animals. Master cat was on his own to capture the wealth and the princess for his master. Another difference is that “Master Cat” was based off of a Fairy Tale while “How Stories” came to earth was based on a Oral Folk Tale. A final difference between the tales was that Women were viewed as possessions in “Master Cat” and in “How Stories Came To Earth” Woman were viewed with a higher IQ or intelligence than men. In the end the cat benefited himself and the spider benefitted the rest of

Many civilizations pass down folktales orally as part of their cultural traditions. Iktomi, a Native American tale; and Anansi, a West African tale, are a few of these well-known stories. Even though these tales are from different regions, they are essentially the same. Both revolve around a trickster who is clever, greedy, and supernaturally powerful. Iktomi and Anansi both show that they are very clever characters. Iktomi proves that he is clever in how he catches ducks for his food. He tells the ducks he will teach them how to dance, but they must close their eyes or they will be cursed. Being naïve, the ducks follow his orders, giving Iktomi time to kill a few of them before they realize what is happening. Similarly, Anansi must catch an entire hornet’s nest as a way to learn all the stories of the world. He convinces the hornets that a massive storm is approaching. To survive, he tells the hornets they must all fly into a hole dug in the ground. The hornets were just as naïve as the ducks and flew right into the hole, making it very easy for Anansi to trap and catch them all. Along with showing that they are clever, Iktomi and Anansi showed a less desirable character trait as well: greed. Anansi’s greedy side shines through when his family’s crops become less abundant. Instead of sticking by his families’ side during this hardship, he fakes his own death because he knows he will be buried in the crop fields, easy access to food. Anansi stays in his coffin during the day, but sneaks out at night to freely eat the best crops from the field. He leaves his family to starve so that he can live off the land. Iktomi proves himself to fall guilty to this dreadful character trait as well. Once again, he is hungry so he goes out into the cold weather to find food. The only warmth he has is the blanket he brought along. He decides to ask help from the sacred rock. Iktomi sacrifices his blanket to the rock to help him find food. When Iktomi leaves the rock, he crosses the…

Sophocles once stated, “Success is sweet, even if it comes from deception.” This truth is portrayed through three different short stories known as “How Stories Came to Earth”, “Coyote Steals Fire”, and “Master Cat: Puss in Boots”. In each of these three tales the main character spins webs of deceit by tricking people or, in some cases, animals into doing what they want them to. This includes Anansi’s act of tricking a snake into stretching himself out so Anansi could tie the snake to the stick in “How Stories Came to Earth.” Another form of deceit used, this time, in “Coyote Steals Fire” is when Coyote pretends to be dead in order to steal the fire from Thunder. In the story “Master Cat: Puss in Boots” Puss creates many empty threats to tell people so that they will lie for him. Each character obtains what he/she wishes to through a form of deception. While “How Stories Came to Earth”, “Coyote Steals Fire”, and “Master Cat: Puss in Boots” share similar tricksters who ultimately achieve their goals, they differ on the subject matters of their strategies, the benefits their tricks play on society, and the justification of their actions.…

The final way that they compare was the way that they were punished. For example, these stories include this idea that you can’t control fate, but in the Monkey’s Paw they had a bit more control. They could’ve just decided not to use the monkey’s paw. However in the Masque of the Red Death Prince prospero tried his hardest to prevent death from the disease, however, as hard as he tried there was no escape. The way they portrayed foreshadowing was different as well. In the Masque of the Red Death the author used more objects for foreshadowing. Like with the clock, which represented the time they had left, or the black room with red stained glass. Than in the Monkey’s Paw Major Sergeant Morris tell them about the dangers of using it. They are both dark stories, but not the…

    Similarity and Coyote

    • 540 Words
    • 3 Pages

One similarity that these two trickster tales have is that they explain why the world is how it is. For example in “Coyote and the Buffalo” Coyote kills the young cow that was given to him by Buffalo Bull as food, then he goes to Buffalo Bull to ask for another one, but the young cow that Coyote had killed has returned from the dead and refuses to go with him and Buffalo Bull also denies him another one. This explains why there are no buffalo in the Kettle Falls on the Columbia River, all because of Coyote. In “Fox and Coyote and Whale” Fox and Coyote go after Fox’s wife who was kidnapped by Whale. After Fox and Coyote rescue her, Fox cuts off Whale’s head and tosses it into the ocean and that is why whales don’t live in the rivers and Whale could no longer make love to the wives of other men. The trickster tale also explains why Land People and Water people don’t love each other because Fox killed Whale.…

One similarity between these two trickster tales is that they both have purposes to teach morals. The moral teaching in "Coyote and the Buffalo" is to not be greedy. An example would be when Coyote killed the cow for more food because he was tired of eating only the fat. As a result he gets the remains of the cow stolen and is left with nothing. In "Fox and Coyote and Whale", one of the morals is not to steal someone's wife. Whale steals Fox's wife and takes her to his lodge which leads Coyote and Fox's wife. Whale ends up getting his head chopped off and thrown into the ocean. They both teach morals, just in different ways.…
