The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. The program is also working with some of these individuals to get them back on their feet to fend for themselves. They have to go through programs if any of them…
First, working for community service hours builds character and responsibility. People who make up community service hours are either to lazy or do not want to work unless they are paid. Working for your hours teaches work ethic and that work hours do not always need to be paid.…
I wasn't too disappointed when I was served 15 hours of community service. I understood at this point that what I had done wasn't okay and I deserved community service. I chose to make my time up at the boys and girls club. I did this because I know the time I spent there would be appreciated by the staff and children. After making my time up I still had a feeling of guilt because I know I can never take back what I did, but I had a sense of relief and felt like a better person at the end of the…
With the Goodwill experience, I was able to learn how to communicate and interact with individuals who have special needs. By going to Door of Face, it allowed me to learn how to teach this population of men about their health. The teaching project at Goodwill was a great experience as I was able to educate that population and strengthen their knowledge about staying safe during daily activities.…
Shopping is apart of everyday life, and here at Goodwill we are aware of that. Goodwill is not just a place to shop though; it is a place where people can go get help, a place of community outreach. Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Now, Goodwill Industries are North America’s leading nonprofit provider of education, training, and career services for people with disadvantages, such as welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education or work experience, as well as those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Our mission is that the clothing and household goods people donate are sold in over 2,200 Goodwill retail stores and on Goodwill Internet auction site, www.shopgoodwill.com. The revenues fund job training and other services to prepare people for job success. More than 84 percent of Goodwill’s total revenues are used to fund education and career services, and other critical community programs…
At the start of high school, I learned that all students at my school were expected to perform sixty hours of community service before graduating. I hoped that my time would be well used, and that I could create a noticeable difference in someone else's life.…
I knew that they collect and spread resources throughout the community. What I did not know was that they provide opportunity for people to complete community service as part of a sentencing. They do not just give them work to do but counsel and advocate for them as well. One of the people that I worked with when I volunteered was convicted for drug abuse. He had to do community service to meet his sentencing requirements. He also had to do drug counseling. The Major at the Salvation Army works with these people to help them get off drugs and become a productive member of society. I also worked with a few young men who were completing high school through an alternative school program. Then there was Major Carol and I working that day. It was nice to see such a diverse group of people working together to benefit the less fortunate in our community. It was our job to sort and organize food for the Christmas Baskets and the food pantry. They have close to 300 families on their list this year from Marinette and Menominee who will be receiving baskets this year. It is amazing that by volunteering 3 hours one Saturday morning; I will have affected the lives of that many people on Christmas this year. The volunteer assignment experience relates to the theme of our course by showing us that there are less fortunate people in our community and it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to…
Criminal Justice, one of the best known academies at my school campus. CJ, as all cadets refer to is known by its academic excellence and community service. As comrades of the academy we are required to do 50+ community hours yearly. I myself go beyond the community service requirements because I am an over achiever person but also because I love helping people and giving back to my community.…
I have the experience of volunteering for two times. Both schools that I went to are very poor school as most of students come from neighbor countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, whom their parents immigrate illegally to Thailand for working opportunity. Also the school director tries to help this children by give them opportunity to study without tuitions fee, which is make financial support from the government is not enough. Therefore, my friends and I went to give the necessary stuffs such as sport facilities and some amount of money that my friends and I did the donation from kind-hearted people. We also educated them in various topics such as teach them English daily use sentences and basic economics in term of how to saving. The reason that I choose to teach them how to saving is I found that their family financial status is not good, so it is necessary for them to use money correctly and make sure that they will not overspending.…
Community service is someone or a group of people provide a service to the community. It can be a reason or a choice; sometimes it’s mandatory for some people. You’re not getting paid to serve the community, but giving back hours. It’s like you repaying a debt to your society. It’s not the same as volunteering, but their similar. They both have different meanings to them. Everyone has to do it sometime in life. Also, the court system mainly use it on the people. Just know giving back in your society is repaying back for your services and kindness.…
This is Tammy Ngo, and I know that you are very busy and have a lot of things on your plate but I have been inquiring about my badge for the last one and a half week without result. I had tried to attend to this matter in a timely matter in order to reduce the trouble it might cause everyone. I do admit that it was initially my fault in losing the badge and missing my shift on 1/16 (the day after I lost my badge and found it missing). I had tried my best to reach you through emails and phone calls to the volunteer office when on 1/19, you told me that my badge would be ready for me in front of the office by Saturday; which was the day of my next shift. Since I was expecting my badge by my next shift, I did not reschedule any of my future shift on the assumption that the matter will be resolved.…
My youth group leader instilled the importance of community service in me at a young age. Youth group is where I have done the majority of my community service projects. One of my favorite projects was the grocery bandits. My Wednesday night class encouraged the church to bring in groceries to make a Thanksgiving meal out of. We ended up being able to make several full boxes of groceries. My class delivered these boxes anonymously to families in the community that were struggling. I believe that community service is a great thing, but being able to do it without taking credit for it takes real courage. I’ve also volunteered at a homeless shelter/food storehouse twice with my youth group. Other community service projects that I’ve done include: cleaning an elderly ladies house, cleaning another elderly ladies yard gathering supplies to take to the battered…
Living in one of the most dangerous neighborhood in the city of Milwaukee, I believe that community service is a must. Community service is a huge component of my life that gives me an opportunity to make my society a better place, the small things count. Today, 10/28/2017, I lost a classmate, Jakeem Sims, due to violence and gang activity within the City of Milwaukee. He was one of the smartest, funniest, and down to earth kid I knew. I knew that he wanted to at least graduate college in order to have a life that he always dreamed of having. As a result, my goal is to be able to provide a safe community, in which we work together to help build and restore not only the Sherman Park neighborhood, but the whole community in which we reside in.…
The years I spent in middle school and high school have opened my eyes to the field of Social Work. I volunteered whenever I got the chance. I was in Student Council and from that, I donated a lot of my time to help with that and other organizations. Throughout those years, I was rewarded my senior year with an award for the most community service hours. My father works for the Michigan State Police, and through him, I volunteered with a lot of organizations through NCRESA. Halloween Hallow, Santa’s story book, and Kids Day were all different events that I volunteered for an absolutely loved. Now, I am a junior and I have still kept busy with volunteering. My freshmen year, taking SW100, we were required to do 15 hours of community service. I volunteered my 15 hours at the Marquette Jacobetti Veterans Center. Volunteering there has very much impacted my life. Whenever I went to see the veterans I was so thankful to them. Listening to their stories has been one of my favorite volunteer memories. In fact, my older sister Jennifer and I are thinking about going and talking to the volunteer coordinator to see if we can come back and continue. Another activity is Northern’s Make a Difference Day which has always been a great experience. Seeing how grateful those who we raked yards for were was truly wonderful. I will continue with Make a Difference Day! My sophomore year, I signed up through NMU’s volunteer center…
Goodwill’s goal is “to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work”. Noble, no? This has resulted in 89 million total employment and community services. Over 318,000 people have been placed into employment because of the educational credentials earned through Goodwill. More than 24 million people have utilized Goodwill’s resources, which is three times the number recorded in 2013. This was accomplished by the $5.37 billion accumulated through Goodwill organizations, and the 83% spent directly on programs. They have a total of 90 million donors, and more than 3,000 stores, including an online auction.…
