ANALYSIS I chose to analyze my reflective piece entitled “If dem doh care why should I” by the use of primarily investigating dialect variation and communicative behaviors. Dialectal variation refers to the variety of a language due to geographic, individual and group factors. In the monologue the two main dialects used were Creole and Standard English. Creole is a language with pidgin in its ancestry that is spoken as a native language by the majority of its speech community. In the monologue the main character used creole language often. She used words like “dem doh” and “ent”. Even her mother used the creole language by using words like “hadda” which means had to and “yuh” which refers to you. This use of the Creole language indicates that both other and daughter comes from a poor educational background. Standard English is a dialect that is supported by important institutions. Such institutional support may come from governments’s recognition or presentation of the standard form of being ‘good’, ‘correct’ or ‘proper’ form of language. Standard English was used by Mother Millie in the monologue. Phrases like “won’t they” and “what’s the matter dear” shows that Mother Millie is familiar with the standard variety of language and this indicates that she has an educational background. On the language continuum the main character and her mother spoke in the Basilect while Mother Millie spoke in the Acrolect. Communicative behaviors are non-verbal forms of communication. In the monologue communicative behaviors expressed emotions for example “clenching fits” indicated that the speaker was angry and fed up.
