October 27, 2008 the day the city of Philadelphia finally could breathe a sigh of relief. On this date the Philadelphia Phillies won the 2008 World Series, breaking the city’s long 25 years of heart breaks since the city’s last major sport championship. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays in 5 Games in the best of 7 series. Four days later the city’s dreams of a parade down Broad Street finally became a reality. On October 31st, 2008 instead of costumes and Halloween candy the city was painted red. Everywhere you could see, everyone was celebrating the World Championship of our Philadelphia Phillies. The city took a day off. Whether it be from school, work, or even a day full of errands, the city shut down to be a part of this great memory. Hundreds of thousands poured into the heart of the Philadelphia. As the parade marched on down Broad Street, fans lined the street 40 to 50 rows of people deep. The sea of red shirts flooded Broad Street, but was then separated by the flatbed trucks that carried our beloved champions. The roar of the crowd chanting, “Let’s Go Phillies!” echoed throughout the entire city just like the Liberty Bell used too when it rang so many years ago. The parade ended in Citizens Bank Park with a sellout crowd. As they held up the trophy the place erupted in cheers.…

The next person I interviewed is Jesus Espendosa a 17 year old high school senior, told me why he loved soccer so much, “soccer is actually a lot of fun. You have more planning and you don’t get hurt as much as you think. In fact you have to be more flexible then powerful to play the game.” I asked him if he thought that his heritage liked football more than other sports and he said, “Yes, because it was the only sport we could really play when we lived in México, all my friends there play it too.” Jesus is very active, and has participated in many soccer games.…

My Dad is an extremely hard working person. He is always up and ready for the day before anyone else in my family and He is also the last person up always working on His projects. Just as much of a harder worker He is my Dad is also twice, even three times nicer than. My Dad is the most loving person I know, He has been extremely supportive in all my endeavors in life. He always reminds me of how much He loves me and care for me, He also sacrificed so much of His life to give me a better opportunity. He works selflessly to provide for my brothers and sisters all our necessities and goes the extra mile to ensure that we have everything we need to be successful. He always is there for me when I need Him. He would literally drop whatever He is doing just to hear me rant or if I need a shoulder to cry on. He never belittles me or my problems and insecurities. He constantly reaffirms me of my potential when I feel just like garbage. He is always telling me I am destined for greatness, I am priceless and worth more than the world to Him. Even when I hear Him tell me these things over and over I believe Him because He is extremely genuine. It is actually because of Him that I want to help people with my life. He always told me to never be greedy or money hungry, but that I should use my wealth to help the poor. He never looks down on people in a worse position than Him, He always calls other people our brothers and sisters.…

As we got closer to the entrance, we saw a bunch of stands up which let you practice soccer skills. I, without thinking twice, ran up to try to win a brand new soccer ball. The ball was very cold, smooth, and had a bunch of little bumps on it which allow for better grip when dribbling. It’s colors were bright red, green, and white with a big eagle in the center. This all felt like little jewels that the big monster of a stadium was allowing us to…

It’s not that easy being green. It’s not that easy being a frog, either. Some would say that he is the most awesome amphibian of all time. Others would proclaim him a puppet above the rest. His name and footprints are on a star at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, a rare honor given only to the best in Hollywood. It’s an even greater leap for an amphibian. You guessed it. I am here today to honor Kermit the Frog, a well-mannered, always positive, funny, frog who left the life of a quiet, peaceful swamp in the bayou to take on the world with his green philosophy. To some Kermit is an icon of hope for a greener, cleaner world, and to others he is an inspiration towards acceptance and kindness to his fellow creatures on Earth. To ALL who have ever heard Kermit speak or sing, he is the voice of wisdom and encouragement when they just need a smile.…

Soccer has been a huge part of my life since I was young. Ever since I can remember, I’ve joined the school soccer team when I was given the option. Of all the years I was involved in soccer, my high school freshman year was the most memorable. Due to my advanced skills, I was put in the senior soccer team, a feat quite difficult to accomplish for any incoming athlete. That year our school hired a highly experienced coach; he made our school team feel like a real discourse community. Unlike other coaches I’ve had before, his knowledge and wisdom of the game of soccer surpassed that of anyone I’ve met. From the very first day of try-outs, I felt like I was part of a professional soccer team. Running back and forth across the soccer field, my classmates and I were working hard to impress the new coach, as he was just hours away from picking his team players. Little did I know I was in for an experience of a lifetime.…

Over the years his real job has come with many different titles. For 50 years he has been a son and brother, for 31 he has been a loving father, for 26 he has been a dedicated husband, for 5 he has been a grandfather, and for 18 years and counting he has been and will always be my mentor. Today I would like to honor my father John Zachary Smith, and explain to you how and why he has become my mentor. Standing at exactly 6 feet tall, sporting dark black hair and tan skin, being loud, extremely talkative and radiating with energy, are just a few characteristics that can be attributed to his Italian heritage. When introducing himself to someone new, he reaches out his rough and calloused hand giving them a firm handshake and replies “My name’s John Smith, really honest”. My father has the ability to make friends with anyone because he is truly a real joy to be around. He sparks conversations with people and it would seem that were best friends.…

Kind, strong headed, sweet spirited, loving, strong in the gospel, and always wanting to make people laugh shaped Rachel into a true young woman. I was just thinking ‘what about volleyball?’ because volleyball was my life.” Throughout her treatments though, Rachel prayed for her life and became less focused on sports. All she wanted to do was get through this year alive. The only cure to her cancer was five rounds of chemo therapy, and staying in the hospital for a year. Many people would breakdown and cry, in fact that’s what I did when I found out the news. But not this girl. Rachel started a blog that she updated every couple days to keep her friends and family informed on how she was doing. Some days were better than others, but she always kept a good attitude. Worn down, exhausted, skin and bone, no hair, excruciating pain, and still a smile on her face. “Losing my hair was the worst. I would run my finger through my hair and big chunks would fall out, that’s when I decided to shave it off so I didn’t have to suffer anymore.”…
