Comet Thon As A Role Model
My freshman year, striving to become more active in my community, I became a founding officer of Comet THON, a philanthropy organization benefitting pediatric cancer research. Being a new student organization, my actions would establish the foundations of Comet THON for years to come. In addition, I had to recruit others to the organization and guide them in ways they could benefit our cause. Through my experience helping establish Comet THON, I learned that my personal leadership style is to lead by cooperation. I discovered that I loved serving as a role model to others and enjoyed working in a team. Being a new student organization, cooperation amongst the officers and members was key to success. I also realized that being a leader is far

Throughout my high school years, I maintained various leadership roles. The first of which was serving as a section leader in the marching band for three years. As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

Leadership is a lifestyle, not a role one adopts. Leadership requires strength and power, but also the ability to empathize and recognize others' needs. As a high school student, I have had many opportunities to be a leader, whether it be through clubs, group projects, or extracurricular activities. During my Junior year, I assistant directed the play Steel Magnolias under the eye of my drama teacher as well as a college student director. This role allowed me to learn the ropes of directing as well as take care of the six girls cast in the show. I adapted the role of the "stage mom," making sure every hair was curled to perfection and every prop was in its place, as well as ensuring their lines were memorized and their staging was proper. I…

As stated by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist, “Once upon a time, people identified the god Neptune as the source of storms at sea. Today we call these storms hurricanes… The only people who still call hurricanes acts of God are the people who write insurance forms.” This quote by Neil DeGrasse Tyson not only applies to storms, but also applies to many things we previously did not understand. It basically displays the idea that just because we do not understand a concept, does not mean we will not be able to explain it in the future. Our society must get to the point of being comfortable with not knowing, instead of using myth to explain concepts we do not understand. In…

This is a living example of technology advancement. We accepted things and events attributing their cause to nature and her wrath. However, advancement and technology could give us a different picture. This way, it has become a habit with us to accept everything that history states and dictates. On the process the modern world has found ways to offer a different view on it. In other words, the modern world has turn impossibilities to possibilities. William’s report gives an insight into this. A mummy scanned after a thousand years has opened new avenues regarding a cause of it’s’ death. The mummy referred to here is that of King Tut or Tutankhamen, meaning the living image of Amun. The earlier ruler, Amenhotep-IV has shocked the country by attacking Amun, a major God, smashing his images and closing all his temples. His family had ruled for centuries before the boy king, Tut took over. However, Tut ruled for nine years and then died both mysteriously and unexpectedly.…

When one thinks of a leader, what type of person do we think of? Is that individual a hero that we see on television, a cartoon character, a family member, or is that person a public servant? Regardless of occupation and title, a leader is a person who inspires others and they know how to motivate people. “When they arrive, you see something about them that stands out. The inner strength of their leadership ability emerges”. (Gonzalez, 2007, February 1). Leaders are individuals in your area of work who are focused on the tasks at hand and they have a clear and concise vision on what their respective organizations are set out to do.…

A self-employed business man once said, “The best example of leadership is leading by example” (Jerry McClain). He describes a true leader, a pioneer whose morals and selflessness guide her to guide others. She is an inspiration, and a beacon of hope for all to follow. I share this passion for helping and guiding by example, and as a member of the National Junior Honor Society, I would seek to better the community just as I do every day inside and outside of the classroom.…

From a young age, my father would constantly repeat two sayings to me. The first was the saying “Be careful!” The second was a phrase that continues to resonate with me: “Be a leader, not a follower.” Throughout my life and undergraduate education, I have tried to follow this mantra for my own wellbeing but also for the wellbeing of others. My parents stressed the importance of quality leadership and cultural competency from a young age.…

My leadership style is best described as a funnel. My aim in leading others is not to conduct every single individual, but to guide everyone to work towards the same central goal. I believe it is best to let others bring their own unique abilities to the table and use them to accomplish the task at hand. One of my most memorable experiences as a leader was leading my school’s student section. When I came into high school, school spirit was a joke. At games, everyone sat and no one said a thing. I decided that needed to change. My fellow students didn’t want change. They told my friends and I to sit down and shut up. I kept standing, I yelled louder, and kept going. Eventually, I started a spark. By the end of my freshman year there were a group…

Leadership is one of the most important traits to have not only in school but outside too. In school, one can take up the position of being a leader by tutoring classmates. By helping a peer understand a topic they were confused about, a feeling of accomplishment and happiness comes along. One can also be a leader by being a part of a club and helping the club officers and other members reach their club goals. For example, I am part of the Environmental Club and I have been an active member since freshmen year. I have participated in many of the events put together by this club and have helped them in planning these events to ensure things run smoothly. At the moment, I am working with two friends on a marketing project for the tower gardens in school. If I am accepted into the National Honors Society, I will be able to gain more experience in being a leader and I will then be able to help the Environmental Club more in fulfilling more club goals. If accepted, I plan to take everything I learn from being a part of this society and apply it to my life.…

It is difficult to narrow down the many instances where I have showed great leadership but many can be found in my involvements in teamwork. I have been looked to as a leader and have taken responsibility for various group projects. I have discovered much about fairness, compromise, and responsible qualities that are required to be a “good” leader. Often, I have had to sacrifice my own free time and personal desires for the benefit of the group. I believe this is the most important part of being a leader, the ability to sacrifice individual time and desires for the overall gain of the people that you are leading. Therefore with my induction into the national honor society I plan to demonstrate great leadership while also trying harder to be diligent and set an example for others.…
