“There are approximately 176,000” (NCAA) student athletes currently playing sports in college. If you ask people whether College athletes should be paid, most would say yes, but most people don’t realize the factors that go into that decision. With that being said college athletes should not be paid because they receive more benefits than other people on campus by receiving free things like education, clothing/accessories, and the cost for the staff and for transportation. Not only that, but they also have to pay the coaches and everyone who contributes to the program. Overall there are many things that have to go into making sure programs stay up and running. Due to that, they should not be paid. In college sports there are many things that have to be taken into account when asking if a college athlete should be paid. When playing in a college sport, the team usually travels to another state to play. Taking that into account the university has to pay for flights because they can’t take busses everywhere, and even if they did they would have to pay a hefty amount of money. For example the University of Minnesota’s cost for travel last year costed 2.9 million dollars (charter flights for college) and that is not including maintenance and fuel. Now let’s take into consideration the staff pay, the staff has to be paid a reasonable amount to be able to provide for their families. The average major college program head coach makes 1.64 million a year (D1 coach earnings per year).Keep in mind that all these fees have to be paid by the university and partially by the NCAA. If the NCAA were to add college players to the conversation of getting paid it would put the university in great debt due to the many players that participate in

Should college athletes be given legal payment for their contribution to the universities? Many colleges around the United States have given thought to paying the athletes that play at their schools, especially in Division 1 programs. Collegiate athletes believe they are the source of income for their school, and request to obtain a part of what they produce. Although lawmakers, and experts conclude that paying college athletes would remove the amateurism from the game, college athletes should be paid because they are making money for the college, they are dedicating countless hours of hard work, also they would stay in school longer.…

The first reason why athletes should not get paid is because they already get free things from their sponsors to their fans. “The NCAA athletes get paid with psychology classes, track suits, knee braces, and ice baths.” This proves that the athletes get free stuff some of it that they don’t even use. Also the more popular you get the more fans you have and more sponsorship you have which means more money/gifts.…

The NCAA has forever aimed to maintain amateurism in their sports. There is a very thick line between amateurism and professionalism. Professionalism has been entered when that athlete receives a salary for his or her services. Granting for the payment of student-athletes would defeat the intentions of everything the NCAA exemplifies. If college athletes earn a yearly salary this would make them professional. We cannot forget that these young adults are at college to get an education. One blogger from ESPN Radio 104.5 stated, “The percentage of football players getting drafted is 2%... The other 98% will have college degrees if they stick it out.” (College Athletes Shouldn’t Get Paid). By saying this, he means that it would be pointless to play 98% of players who will never make it pro. That statistic does not cover the other sports like baseball, basketball, and soccer that give out full rides and other scholarships to many of their athletes. Many of those who are getting a free education should be grateful for it, because they are not good enough for the pro’s and are going to use their degree once they get out into the workforce. We cannot forget that these players are amateur and have just gotten out of high school. Players cannot be myopic. They must give credence to the big picture and that they are only young and in…

The reason I think student athletes should be getting paid is because , enterprises gone mad with TV contracts and multi-million-dollar coaches who earn vastly more than the world’s best professors . The coach also noted that the university of michigan just signed a 66.5 million agreement granting adidas sole right to garb the school’s athletes and the NCAA last year signed a 14 year , 11 billion TV contract just to televise the basketball tournament. They don’t know whether universities should end the charade and switch to hired teams. But at least branch has raised an issue that should cause major debate in academia. There have been ongoing arguments over the past decade of whether or not college athletes should be paid to play. Many argue that they do not have time to get real jobs because the requirements for the sport that they participate in are far too demanding. Others cite that these athletes are provided full scholarships to attend the schools at which they are playing the sport. However regardless of the argument, I still feel that college athletes should not be paid to play.…

College players need to get paid for what they do. When college players do not get paid, they do not get paid for the great things that they do on national TV. College players make more money for school playing their sport than people's salaries. Did you know that just if you make it to the NCAA BCS game, you get at least six million dollars. That's not even if you win. Sure student athletes get free things like free tuition, board, room fees, and food, but paying players would give them money for things like laundry, late night snacks, food for restaurants when on the road, and just different things. The three reasons why student athletes should get paid is because playing a college sport is like having a job, college players make money for…

    Paying College Athletes

Paying college athletes has been a controversy for over a century, dating back to what is considered to be the first intercollegiate competition. Fact is college athletes want to get paid beyond a scholarship. Yes, scholarships pay for the student’s tuition, books, classes, living expenses, etc., but they have no money to buy clothes, pay for parking, food, etc. Expecting the players to get paid millions of dollars is obviously unrealistic, but paying them as if it was a full time job, at least minimum wage is adequate enough. For the 15 highest paid coaches in Division 1, together they bring in around $100,000,000 every year.…

The controversy surrounding the compensation of college athletes has garnished widespread attention across America. While very few institutional athletic programs are able to achieve a sustainable budget, the NCAA should not allow institutions to provide salaries for student athletes because it will impair the mission of higher education, and destroy the true meaning of college sport. First and foremost, institutions cannot afford to pay student athletes. The majority of college athletic programs are very expensive, with only 14 programs managing to gross financial benefits, according to data submitted by the NCAA. For example, $22 million is required for the Ohio State University to “balance the budget.”…
