As the young and naive children we were, adults always told us to never give up on our dreams. This statement usually applied to the impractical dreams of becoming president of the United States, transforming into a superhero, or playing alongside professional athletes. These were all big ideas and aspirations that fueled our carefree childhoods, and were appropriate practice for shaping the paths to our true passions we discover later on in our lives; particularly in high school. High school is where teenagers are able experiment and begin to understand themselves as individuals, rather than what everybody else likes to do. Of course there are exceptions to those who are the “followers” rather than the “leaders”, but I’d like to claim I had…

Are participation trophies effecting young athletes? According to the Trophies For All policy, young athletes are being given an award for participating. Will this affect young athletes in a bad way or a good way? Simply giving out an award for showing up is a tantamount of child abuse. Receiving participation trophies can effect the young athlete's future in a bad result. There are some good results ,but there are a lot of bad results as well. This can hurt ,not just the athletes ,but the programs as well.…

All this accomplishments came because I as a leader consider my teammates as my family and kept the sport entertaining. I believed I was leading the team in a right direction because the runners were glad every day, they never complained about practicing every day. I made sure they like the team and my leadership because I want them to step up and talk to me whenever I am making mistakes, I did not want them to fear me. I believe leaders are formed to help others and that’s what I believe I have achieved with my…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

I was sitting in my freshman geometry class, talking to some friends about injuries. We were talking about how none of us have ever gotten injured in our entire life. I had been playing sports since I was in the sixth grade, and nothing ever happened. In my life I had never broken a bone. I had never even sprained an ankle. I had never worn any kind of brace, taped an ankle, or talked to a trainer about any muscle issue or pain issue. When kids would lay on the court, I always thought they were fine or looking for a little attention. My thought was that they needed to rush off the court because they were dripping sweat all over the hardwood floor, and they were taking too much time up. I used to assume they were killing our momentum when they would fall down and cry because some schools…

I attended the career fair event in the Carson Center with the intent to talk to people willing to employ Athletic Trainers. I had been looking forward to it, and soon realized it was not what I thought it would be. I had previously looked into a few of the participant’s companies and found a few that might be worth talking to. However, this number was few and far between for only Athletic Training jobs. Some of the people I talked to were more interested in me if I had a Pre-Physical Therapy track rather than just Athletic Training, such as Common Wealth Health Corporation, Wabash Christian Therapy, and Pro Rehab. Considering I have not yet decided if I wanted to just go into Physical Therapy or just Athletic Training yet. Meeting these people felt like I was almost incompetent with my future degree since I am leaning towards a Master’s in Athletic Training.…

Throughout my life I have focused on school, sports, and working. Balancing all three of these at the same time was very difficult, but I made it work. Challenging myself has been a big part of my high school years both in and out of school. After starting sports at the age of three, balancing school and sports became a daily routine. Through high school I have played soccer all year long and almost every day. Being involved in both high school and travel teams, 3v3 leagues, and winter leagues has built up my responsibilities and handling the pressure of keeping my schedule in line. Making money was also a priority I made for myself after I received my driver's license. I got a job at my local pool the year I started driving. This was only a summer job so after my soccer season in the fall, I looked for another job. I got hired at the local movie theatre and worked there throughout my junior year of high school. I returned to the pool in the summer because I enjoyed it so much and plan to keep returning throughout high school and college.…

I believe that I would be an ideal candidate for guaranteed admission into the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Pharmacy Program because I always look to challenge myself, I have an extremely strong work ethic, and I’m motivated to succeed in everything. As a swimmer, I’ve been trained to push through the pain and accept it. I always try my best in everything, because I’ve learned that hard work is necessary for greatness. Sophomore year swim season, we had a new coach who really worked us to the bone. My teammates and I would cry at least once a week from the pain of the practices. They were harder than what we were used to. One day in particular, I’d had an ear infection and kept feeling sharp pain throughout the school day. At practice, it became worse. My…

Since I was 7 years old, basketball has played an integral part of my life. I have devoted countless hours to not just a sport, but a passion, an outlet; to the game that I love. When I arrived at Bow Middle School as a fifth grader, my classmates and I would always look up to the 7th and 8th grade middle school basketball teams. Every year during winter carnival, the boys and girls teams would play a game in front of the entire school. Playing in that game became a dream and a goal of mine, but first I would need to make the team. For three years I developed my basketball skills, using my passion for the sport and desire to play in that game as motivation. When tryouts for basketball in 8th grade drew near, I knew I was ready. However a new coach would be at the helm this year. Our new basketball coach was also a coach for the youth football program. This resulted in numerous football…

All my life, I have been playing football. Every single Friday since I was young, I have gone to support the Bethel Park football team under the lights no matter what. Weather, distance, and access to a vehicle never stood in my way. Each player was a role model for me, and I wanted to be just like them. In my younger years of playing, I was just known as the “average” football player; I was slightly above “bad” but slightly below “good”. As I grew older, I started to talk to varsity football players, and I asked them about their own experiences. I wanted to know what they were like when they were my age and how they got to where they were. Some were just like me, not standouts as kids but still very good athletes. However, I didn’t want to just be a good football player - I wanted to be a great football…

Wake up, go to school, study, get good grades and repeat. That’s what my parents have always told me to do ever since I was a child and careless of my future ahead. Thinking of those words now, I can understand what my parents were trying to make me understand, but is this really how being young and free supposed to be like? Through having to to this assignment, I actually got to think and elaborate on things I’d like to accomplish before having to fully focus on my career and family. One of my first accomplishments before heading of to university would be becoming fluent in German. By taking online lessons and practising through phone calls to my german relatives, I’ll be fluent in German in no time. Another accomplishment which is quite cliche, is to get accepted to McMaster’s university and study life sciences, and the only route to getting there is to work hard at school.…
