Forecasting allowed the manufacturer to gain greater control over its inventory and set expectations of the levels of materials that would be kept on the production line and in its storerooms. There has been a reduction in costs associated with holding parts, managing parts, inventorying parts, creating purchase orders, handling freight and managing soft costs. For every purchase order, there was originally at least $50 in associated costs. By consolidating nearly 1,000 parts, Anixter helped to greatly reduce costs. Instead of everything going through separate steps from a buy to expediter to receiver to quality control to builder, everything is handled by Anixter. Without having to muddle itself with paperwork, the manufacturer only had to focus on the building of its products. The company has set a goal of doubling its profits in five years. Anixter is working with the company to meet its objectives, such as reducing its supplier base by half. Because of Anixter’s just-in-time program, the supply chain has built-in flexibility to meet shifting demands. Anixter can bill the manufacturer in any way and conduct various types of history reports. With engineering support to help fix a problem or change a design and dedicated labs to provide quality control, Anixter is further helping the manufacturer to control costs, meet objectives and maintain its production…

The five forces that that are important for an industry and companies involved are a) Competition b) Buyers c) Substitutes d) Suppliers and e) Compliments. The Chainsaw industry is segmented by customer bases namely professionals, farmer and casual users. These customer segments are differentiated by the cubic-inch displacements. Pro users require 4.5 or greater, farmers require 2.7 – 4.5 inches and casual users require about 2.7 inches. The industry is also segment by the distribution channels that each company uses in this case servicing dealers, home centers, department stores, hardware stores and catalog sales. Servicing dealers carry a broad line of chainsaws and also offer servicing and repairs for their products. These complements to the chainsaw increase the value of the product to the customers they serve. These servicing dealers also align themselves with 1 or 2 manufacturers which gives them a higher buying power therefore increasing the value required to compete. Also cooperative advertising by the dealers and manufacturers offers a relational capability by the sharing of resources. In contrast retail channels like home centers do not offer servicing and also offered limited accessories and department stores didn’t carry high quality chainsaws because of the difficulty in selling them. Hardware stores use strategic buying groups to purchase from various manufacturers this strategy gives them a higher buyer power and the ability to dictate market prices. Catalog sales provide to the mass casual market and therefore they carry very limited lines of low priced chainsaws, they don’t provide any servicing and have limited accessories.…

    Curled Metals Case

Curled Metal Inc. (CMI) specializes in selling metal-based products to various markets. With over $55 million in annual sales (FY 2007, Exhibit A), they’ve managed to capture 80% of the automobile industry’s market share by developing and selling a highly specialized product, Slip Seal, designed just for auto manufacturers. They’ve seen a recent slip in sales (a loss of nearly 10% from 2006 to 2007, Exhibit 2), and the pressure is on them to diversify their product line and decrease dependence on the auto industry. They’ve recently developed a new product that aims to revolutionize the pile-driving industry. The introduction of the CMI Cushion Pad has the ability to change the entire industry for its consumers; some of its more prominent features include the capabilities to significantly lower labor and equipment costs, decrease the total amount of pads being used (effectively eliminating waste), and reduce environmental safety concerns amongst the workforce due to the non-toxicity of the pads’ material. CMI has recently conducted two field testings of its Cushion Pads, with incredible results: the new product performed better than expected at both test sites (Kendrick Foundation Company and Corey Construction). Kendrick was so pleased with the Cushion Pads that they’ve asked CMI to quote prices. CMI is now faced with identifying the best price for this product.…

Curled Metal Inc. (CMI) faced a pricing and channel marketing decision for metal pile cushions utilized during pile driving. CMI’s approach to metal pads has significant efficiency advantages over currently used pads available in the market. However, CMI has to take into account several barriers to entry into this market. The primary barrier is that most companies viewed role of pads as a necessary accessory or tangent item instead of viewing them as a potentially value adding or cost reducing part of pile driving. In order to penetrate the market, CMI has to alter the point of view of pile driving pads for the opinion leaders, engineering firms, and contractors involved in the decision process.…

    Vietnam Market Entry

I think this question has a risk/reward element like with any investment opportunity but the variable is also the type of business one would like to invest into. The strengths that make Vietnam great are that it is the twelfth most populous nation with rapid economic growth and substantial FDI (foreign direct investment) as well as ongoing liberalizing economic reforms in the previous 10 years (joining and working with trade groups). Vietnam is growing and emerging and with a plentiful, well-educated, and low cost workforce. However, there are plenty of things that would worry me like the corruption, bureaucracy, and lack of infrastructure. In addition, the Communist party has intentions of keeping firm control and retaining powers such as the right to buy into foreign companies or to decide the level of profits on which to collect taxes. In terms of infrastructure, the airport hasn’t been rehabilitated post war and the roads are terrible without development. In terms of labor and costs, managerial talent was scarce and foreign investors faced high rents, telecommunication costa and cumbersome service contracts. Based on this analysis, Vietnam is an investment opportunity but I would be wary with the risk involved as options for market entrance in terms of stakes and contracts and government approval and regulations may be cumbersome.…

The small market share in the Professional-Tradesmen segment is explained by the a misleading perception of end-consumers and tradesmen which viewed all B&D products for home use rather than for a job (consumers at this segment are people who make a living out of it such as plumbers, electricians and/or carpenters) affecting the brand reputation in the segment. In contrast, on the other two segments, B&D is viewed as a market leader with high quality products.…
