Another Chance

I believe that everyone deserves the chance to love and care for a pet in some way. My family adopted our very first pet, a five-year old half golden retriever and half Australian Sheppard dog named Chance. As long as I can remember my brother, sisters and I have always wanted a pet. I can remember every moment of it like it was the other day; the day after Christmas my parents surprised us all with a dog they had saved from being put to sleep.
The moment Chance walked into our lives everything changed. Right away Chance became very protective of the whole family, wherever we went he would follow or watch us. In the summer, late nights; all of my siblings would hangout out with our friends. When it was time for us to go home my parents would let Chance out and he would come running out towards us letting us know it was time to go home. He was not like an ordinary dog, there was something about the way he looked at you that made us feel like he truly appreciated his new family. Having pets around the house is great therapy in a way and tends to brighten your day even at your darkest hours. Many animals sense different human emotions and they know when you are happy, sad or in pain etc. Whenever I was sad and just feeling down about a certain situation Chance would always come towards me and just by a simple look bring up my spirits. Adopting a dog and giving them a new home for the better, they treat you better and cherish every moment with you until the end. I can truly say my pet changed my life in so many ways. I never would have thought I could love an animal so much. Chance entered our lives not as a puppy, but still very young. Years kept on passing by and I did not realize how old he was getting. I had owned him since I was in first grade and now, then going into my junior year in high school he seemed to not be as active and energetic as he used to be. Being older, he would mainly hangout around

My parents talked to the breeder for what felt like ages. We finally got to see all of the dogs that they had. The room that the puppies were in had a crib, and dog beds. I saw some very, very little puppys, I really wanted them all. The one that we chose, was hiding under the crib. We named him Poncho after the parent's name.…

My family dog is a hairless Chinese Crested named Sid. He is a gray, white, and black dog with no hair except on his head, paws, and the tip of his tail. We rescued Sid 8 years ago from Detroit, Michigan. His owners left him outside in the freezing cold when they moved away. They abandoned him. Adopting Sid changed my life forever. By caring for him, I have learned loyalty, responsibility, love, compassion, and patience. These are traits I see and feel within him as well. I believe animals mirror God’s hope and love for us. For example, God wants us to forgive others who have done us harm. Sid has forgiven his original owners by moving beyond the shy and fearful dog he was when we first brought him home. He is a happy and joyful dog now.…

Copper, my dog that I had had since I was borne, was dying. I couldn’t believe my ears. I ran up to my living room and saw Copper lying on the floor. He was a thirteen year old dog and that was a very good age for a dog to die at. I ran up to him and lay there beside him until my dad had to take him to the vet to get put down.…

The first step of getting my dog began we went to the rescue to take dogs out on walks which I really wanted to do. While we were there I saw on a flyer, my soon to be dog without knowing it, a dog as cute as a baby bunny. It turns out, I was not old enough to walk the dogs, which was like emotionally being hit by a truck. I had to just walk while my mom walked the dogs, which was okay. My mom got more involved with the rescue, and one day while I was at school she was washing dogs, and the dog from the flyer was scared and ducked…

I am the proud owner of a little brown dog named Bruno. I rescued him from the pound while I was in high school. The pound was unsure exactly what kind of dog Bruno was, but stated he is part Dachshund. I mentioned earlier, I rescued Bruno, but in reality he rescued me. My senior year of high school was not the greatest time for me, but owning Bruno got me through it. At the time, I just broke up with my high school “sweetheart” so to my immature young mind, I thought the world was coming to an end and I would never find someone else. Whether it was taking Bruno for walks, or trying to teach him new tricks he kept my mind occupied. I was given the responsibility to take care of him. I made sure he had all of his shots and there was fresh food and water for him. Until he was house broken, I was responsible to clean up after him. By being responsible for another being, it keeps a person centered not always thinking about themselves and their needs.…

It was a Super Bowl game night. The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens were playing as me and my family watched. The sound of popcorn popping in the kitchen and the smell of biscuits in the oven was all around the house. Later on that evening, I felt that there was something wrong, so I tiptoed away from the living room to go look for my dog, and when I found her, she was breathing really hard as if she had ran a marathon. A few seconds later, I came to my senses and realized that she was giving birth, Lexie had six puppies. The runt of the litter was my favorite, she was completely white with little brown spots on her tail. Seeing that she was white and delicate, Tiffany and I decided to name her Snowflake.…

I really enjoyed reading My Life in Dog Years. I am also a dog lover so I could relate completely to Paulsen’s point of view. I wish I could be around dogs as much as he is in this story. The dogs just seem to come out of nowhere and are attracted to him. I think that this book is a good book for children to read that is realistic fiction because it was realistic but there weren’t really any controversial issues. I enjoy that this book is an autobiography about his relationship with dogs, not just stories about dogs. I think it is important that he showed how pets could affect your life directly. I think this book shows that pets are good companions and can change your life.…

I believe that dogs teach you how to be patient. When someone upsets you, avoid biting, a simple growl will do the trick. Dogs wait at home for you to go to work all day and don't complain a single word, and no matter how long you take to get home, they will always be at the door with their tails waving, welcoming you. Learn from dogs. What will be, will be, and like my mom always tells me, best things come to those who wait.…

First of all, pets are good companions. This is especially important for people who live alone and for older people who seldom go out. Some pets can help protect the house from thieves while some pets, like dogs and cats are so lively and energetic by nature that they can give happy hours to children and adults. Secondly, taking care of an animal also help children develop responsible attitudes and learn about nature.…
