ABSTRACT

Over the year, English has become the international language because of its importance. More and more people around the world are studying English as the second language. In this context, the English teaching has more concerned in Vietnam. However, it is not easy to have a logical teaching method for each language skill. There are four main skills in English language: Listening skill, Speaking skill, Reading skill, and Writing skill. Speaking skills have been considered the most important skill. Currently some Vietnamese high schools are applying Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach to English speaking teaching. So, what is Communicative Language Teaching? And what are the benefit of this method?
By this investigation, the writer desires to mention the importance of speaking skills and the advantages of CLT approach. Moreover, there are some possible ways to apply CLT approach to English

    increasing number of Vietnamese students study English in order to grasp many opportunities for higher education, overseas study and future career enhancement as it has become a dominant foreign language in Vietnam. Unlike traditional methods used for a long time in Vietnam, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been likely to meet the Vietnamese students’ needs of communication in English. Since CLT was introduced in the late 1970s, there have been many discussions about application of CLT to second and language instruction (Spada, 2007, p. 271). This essay will discuss extents in which CLT that can be practically implemented in English beginning level classrooms by referring to this writer’s teaching context. It also identifies challenges of the implementation of CLT faced by teachers and students of English in Vietnam.According to Savignon (2001, p. 20), for learners who are accustomed to grammar translation and accuracy for a long time, the transition to CLT will not be easy. Ellis’s (1996, p. 214)noted that CLT is a whole new experience for EFL teachers in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese teachers of English, even those in Lewis and McCook’s study (2002, pp. 146-153) assumed that Vietnamese students are passive learners and it is very hard to implement CLT in English classrooms in Vietnam. It is thought that these assumptions were completely wrong. In Littlewood’s study (2000, p. 34), he pointed out that Asian students would like to be active and independent and they want to explore knowledge themselves and find their own answers. Although Vietnamese students may be used to the grammar-translation, they can become more active and successful language learners in communicative classes, given that teachers know how to familiarise them with CLT.     “The Communicative Approach”, according to the Longman Linguistic Dictionary, “ is a methodology to teach foreign language or language as a second language.” To put it into details, it is a methodology based on the communicative theory, aiming to achieve communicative competence.     Whether CLT should be considered an approach or a methodology is a more abstract debate and here I want to deal with its more practical aspects. In fact, it is those very elements, and the name itself, which have been used to challenge the future relevance of CLT. Firstly, the label implies a focus on communication and some might argue that this method can't be employed genuinely with low levels as there is no authentic communication, due to a limited vocabulary and restricted range of functions. Initially, many of a learner's utterances are very formulaic.     This (the first of two articles) examines some of the more theoretical ideas underlying the ‘Communicative Approach‘. These include the belief that we should teach ‘use’ as well as ‘meaning; and some attitudes regarding the teaching of ‘skills’ and ‘strategies’. A second article will deal with more pedagogical aspects of the approach, especially the idea of a ‘semantic syllabus’ and the question of ‘authenticity’ in materials and methodology. In both articles, it is argued that there is serious confusion in the communicative view of these matters. In particular, the Communicative Approach fails to take account of the knowledge and skills which language students bring with them from their mother tongue and their experience of the world. Introduction There is nothing so creative as a good dogma. During the last few years, under the influence of the ‘Communicative Approach’, language teaching seems to have made great progress. Syllabus design has become a good deal more sophisticated, and we are able to give our students a better and more complete picture than before of how language is used. In methodology, the change has been dramatic. The boring and mechanical exercise types which were so common ten or fifteen years ago have virtually disappeared, to be replaced by a splendid variety of exciting and engaging practice activities. All this is very positive, and it is not difficult to believe that such progress in course design has resulted in a real improvement in the speed and quality of language learning. And yet . . . A dogma remains a dogma, and in this respect the ‘communicative revolution’ is little different from its predecessors in the language teaching field. If one reads through the standard books and articles on the communicative teaching of English, one finds assertions about language use and language learning falling like leaves in autumn; facts, on the other hand, tend to be remarkably…
