A CDSS is a technology system that consists of a variety of tools that aid providers in key decision making in patient care. Providers can use the system to key in pertinent patient data as well as clinical symptoms and receive guidance on proper clinic-based decision making. Addison, Whitcombe, & Glover (2012) found that health care providers that use a CDSS can gain quicker access to important medical diagnostic and plan of care information in providing high quality patient care and improving patient outcomes. While the recent vast inflation of medical textbook information can lead any provider to go into information overload, electronic resources can help synthesize patient-related information and provide clinical guidance in the decision-making process with patient clinical encounters. CDSSs are interactive expert systems, which use embedded clinical knowledge to help health professionals analyse patient data and make decisions regarding diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of health problems (Wu, Lu and Duan, 2008). A systematic review of CDSSs found that over 90% of the systems significantly improved clinical care (Kawamoto, Del Fiol, Lobach and Jenders, 2010). They have shown great promise and contributed towards reducing medical errors and improving patient care (Kawamoto, Houlihan, Balas and Lobach, 2005).…

An electronic health record is also a digital documentation of an individual's medical history that is maintained by health professionals and official agencies. Electronic medical record is medical records of patients and has official permission and approval to be viewed by those who work as a professional employee in the health care facility. Physicians’ offices, medical health professional, and hospitals are the one to use electronic medical record the most because this allows them to look into the computer files and retrieve any patient record and medication record. Health care organization can input or view patient records, communication, legal documents, billing and quality management (Wagner, Lee, Glaser & Burn 2009).
