Introduction Ever since I was in school I always wanted to be a medical doctor. Most of my teachers used to ask me about my future ambitions, and I would always tell them that I wanted to be a doctor. The reason for me wanting to be a doctor was the fact that I liked to the idea of treating people without any charges. To me this was a very humanitarian action to do. Therefore, when four of my family members died as a result of blood cancer, I decided that I must know all I can about blood cancer. I had so many questions that I needed answers such as whether this disease was genetically inherited or not. I also wanted to know why blood cancer killed people so quickly. Therefore, I made my goal to ensure that I must become an expert in the field of laboratory science after graduating from high school. In my opinion, this was the best way to get answers to the many questions I had about blood cancer.
I knew that achieving the required grade to study laboratory science meant I had to work very hard in high school. I graduated high school with flying colors, and I was all set to join university and study laboratory science. However, my father strongly rejected the idea of me studying in a school so far away from home. He insisted that I either chose a different major or stay at home. I decided to choose a different major which happened to be chemistry. I convinced myself that after all science is science. I decided that once I finished the chemistry major, I would support myself to study the laboratory science.
I worked very hard in chemistry as I was aiming to graduate with honors. However, during the course of my study, I learned my things, which left me very surprised since I did not think that chemistry could contain so much information. In fact, it came to a point that I liked it better than laboratory science. This became a major turning point in my career as I decided to study clinical chemistry instead of laboratory

The 17th Century took place from 1601-1700, and was a time of great advancements in both science and philosophy. In the area of scientific achievements, medicine in particular experienced a number of important breakthroughs. During this time, the theories created by Galen, a Greek Physician, in 140 AD were still believed by doctors. His theory stated that four humors, or fluids, determined your personality, ruled your body and how you reacted to diseases. For example; if you had a phlegm humor, then you would be cold, and as a result have a calm personality.…

There is plenty of milestones in my academic career, but the most prestigious is applying what I learned in AP Chemistry to the AP Exam and passing with a four. Although it may not seem as much on the surface, it’s meaningful. This proved all my hard work persevering through AP Chemistry paid off. This class consisted of laboratory experiments which have sparked my interest in chemistry. I enjoyed much of the labs and loved furthering my knowledge of chemistry. I knew then I wanted to study chemistry but being a chemist doesn’t fit my aspirations, I wanted to apply theories not create them. My future goals have been influenced by my volunteer work with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. I’ve helped with christmas tree recyclings and park clean…

There is a common myth that high school is an established educational institute set out to deprive you of a social life and your hair before the age of 18 due to its curriculum and demanding courses .This is in fact is one of the biggest disclaimers you'll hear surrounding any high school. In reality, the academic aspect of high school is quite frankly the easiest obstacle to overcome. Although seemingly hard, for the majority of my academic classes this year I've easily adapted and have progressed quite smoothly within each individual course. To tell the truth the hardest course to overcome was AP Chemistry. While the subject itself captivated much of the basic knowledge taught in regular chemistry, the real difficulty was applying those…

One is that we have developed a method to isolate and grow cancer cells that are circulating in the blood both in culture and in experimental animals. This is an extremely important advance because we demonstrated the cells from the PaCa patient that are circulating in the blood are able to spread and create metastases in other organs. The spreading and metastases are the factors that result in death from the cancer. We propose to study the cancer cells circulating the blood to find out if they are different in different stages of the cancer and if there are markers or identifiers on different groups of the circulating cancer cells. Having ways to identify different types of circulating cancer cells between patients, from the same patient and with different phases of the disease will provide us a way to develop improved treatments at individualized…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Thus began my movement in high school and undergraduate sciences. As I began to read these chemistry and physics books, I noticed that math played an integral part in many higher order sciences. No longer could I put learning math proficiently off, as it was impeding me. And so I powered through mathematics, learning algebra and calculus just to understand physics and chemistry. Before I knew it, I was in high school. Many of my peers struggled with their workload, but I realized that all I had to do was continue learning the way I always had,…

You carry out complex research projects, write technical reports and detailed messages and findings. You present research findings to engineers and other colleagues. They prepare solutions, compounds, and reagents used in laboratories. Because chemistry is hard, not many people do it.…

While walking through my grandmother’s kitchen I saw many pill bottles and containers everywhere. I asked her why she needed to take so many pills. She sat me down and talked to me about what diabetes is, and how it runs through our family. After having that talk at such an early age I became interested not only in diabetes but other diseases as well. This as well as my experience shadowing a pathologist led me to the area of research known as pathology.…

Lost in a world flooded with giant decisions that would affect the near future, an adolescent me siting confounded in my high school sophomore English class. Attempting to simply pass my classes with no clear plan for the approaching future I disregarded any statements made from my teachers, “You need to build good study habits for college.” or “You need a plan for your life, or you will not succeed.” Completely focused on getting out of high school and earning mountains of money to live a lavish lifestyle, without any plan on how to achieve this goal I coasted through my classes day to day not attempting, ignoring the signs of my ignorant ways. Later in the school year, I attended Wella cosmetology education class that once again peaked my interest in the physical science. During the class, met with a cosmetologist that worked alongside a chemist to formulate and produce Wella’s new product line. I then realized that I could combine my love of both the cosmetology industry and chemistry by becoming a cosmetic chemist. The more I began to research the position, the more intrigued I became.…
