Classroom Management Philosophy Essay
My classroom management philosophy is primarily based on a quote that I came across several years ago, “schools exist for the students and not for the teachers.” I want to make sure that my classroom is run with the best interest of the students kept in mind. My main priority is to create a warm and nurturing classroom climate so that my students learn to the best of their ability. It is important that my students become interested in what I am teaching and hopefully they will walk away from my class with a love for reading. I want to insure that my students become prepared for the real world by allowing them to interact with their peers and to have them come together as a community (the classroom) to solve problems. For me, teaching is an adventure that changes from day to day. I want my students to love coming to school each day and to discover what will help stimulate their passion for learning. In any productive classroom, communication, and positive reinforcement are key to maximizing student achievement. The word discipline does not mean punishment for misbehavior. The word discipline basically means, “to teach”. Through discipline and classroom management procedures, I will teach my students how to behave with positive reinforcement rather than punish them for not knowing how to act in school. I was lucky enough during my current practicum to work with a wonderful first grade class and I used many of these strategies. I must say that each child is different and that not all behavior management strategies work for everyone. I had to learn to adjust several rewards and consequences so that they would provide the most benefit in my classroom.     Behavior management in the classroom is an aspect that is dealt with in many different ways by all educators.     I begin each first day of school by guiding the students to come up with classroom rules as a class. I already have in mind what rules I want; however, I believe that the students should feel involved in the workings of the classroom. We talk about using an inside voice, raising your hand and waiting to be called on, keeping your hands and feet to yourself and using nice words. I also introduce the behavior chart that looks like a stop light. Most students are already familiar with green, yellow, and red and I address what each means.
