The American Civil War, a war that pinned the U.S.A against herself and created a rift between North and South. This complex war lasted about four years in which both sides suffered great casualties. Due to the intricacy of the Civil War, there is much that can be learned from what occurred over those years before during and after. The most interesting aspect of this civil war is actually the politics behind it. Specifically how Lincoln was able to change what the North was fighting for. After a series of defeats the once high hopes of the North were dwindling down to nothing. Lincoln noticed this as knew he had to find a way to inspire the Union to push forth. Therefore he issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863. This document released all slaves in countries that disbanded and rebelled against the union. This gave the Union a new reason to fight; to end slavery. This was especially effective because african american soldiers were now fighting to free their own people. That name is arguably unfamiliar, but it shouldn’t be as he is one of the greatest heroes of the civil war. Shaw was the leader of the 54th regiment, the first all African American regiment the U.S has seen that has consisted of all volunteers. Despite of all the oppression and torment Shaw and his regiment received, he still proceeded to lead these men with respect and treat them like the soldiers they were. This man was an inspiration to generals everywhere to do better and because of him the Union was beginning to learn to accept that African americans are just as valuable on the battlefields as the white soldiers were.
