Three facts from each Web site that answer the questions in the required information: A criminal defense lawyer also called a public defender represents their client(s) who have been accused of a crime in which they argue to defend the accused criminal to try and prove their innocence. A four year undergraduate degree and a three year law degree are the minimum requirements to becoming a criminal defense lawyer. Before you can get licensed to practice law in any state you have to take the written bar exam and in some states an ethics exam is also required.

Gathering various amounts of evidence to prove the innocence of the accused criminal is a major role of being a defense lawyer. Having good communication skills, interviewing witnesses and conducting research are among the most needed characteristics of being a successful criminal defense lawyer.
