Cinder Character Analysis Essay

The novel, Cinder, provided an enjoyable use of techniques, however, some of the book’s elements are flawed. Before the positives are presented, I would like to point out the crucial flaw in the plot. The poorly-timed subplot was excessively romantic, drowning out the suspense and action, which caused a loss of effect and tension due to the addition of romantic flairs. The romance that proved to be the biggest detriment to the main plot was the romance between Cinder and Prince/Emperor Kai. This critical flaw aside, large-scale global dilemmas were introduced during the remainder of the book, which provided well-written, realistic elements that gave the story relatability. The final element that elevated the suspense of the novel was strong foreshadowing in combination with irony. A vast majority of the main events in the book were foreshadowed in such a way that it was possible to guess the vague details of each event, but the crucial details about the event were not revealed until much later, effectively creating a veil of suspense and mystery. For example, the fact that Cinder actually was the Lunar heir was foretold, however, whether or not this fact was true was always debated until the truth was fully revealed. This, in combination with the ironic timing of events, such as the climax of the story occurring during a festival commemorating world peace, led me to believe that the story had a very successful combination of strong suspense with ironic humour.
