Chinese Handcuffs
“He put the gun to his temple; Dillion screamed and lunged for him, but it wasn’t even close. He didn’t actually see Preston do it, didn’t see the blood or the brains or the mess because he jerked his eyes away the moment he saw the pressure of Preston’s finger on the trigger. But Dillion heard it. And he saw it in his head.” (64)
Dillion does the right thing by trying to stop his brother Preston from killing himself. Before he did Preston said some hateful things, “You don’t need to know what I’m getting into, you nosy little asshole.” (64) Dillion was shocked by this and backed way off, he is shocked his brother so he tried to ignore it for the most part. “I didn’t mean to get nosy preston.” (64) After that, Preston shot himself. Dillion changed a lot after that, he was shocked, depressed, weak, he felt terrible. Dillion had a coming of age moment after that. He no longer took things for granted. He said things like, “Yeah, Preston is going to buy me a car when I’m 16, it’s what brothers do.” (71) He didn’t consider what his brother was going through, he just expected everything. After Preston shot himself Dillion became much more mature and he learned to treat everyone and everything with respect as it would be his last day seeing them. Dillion did do the best thing by trying to stop his brother from killing himself, but he was to slow.
After the incident Dillion reaches out to his friend, Jennifer Lawston who later becomes his girlfriend to help him in his time of need. At first Dillion just needed someone to talk to and Jennifer was there for him, she was one of Preston’s friends so she helped him cope with his problems the best. Her sister, T.B. however, doesn’t enjoy Dillion being around. Her sister has been hurt to many guys in the past so T.B. doesn’t like any boys around her sister, ever. Dillion tries to befriend her but despite his many attempts she just doesn’t like him. One time when Dillion was over at Jennifer’s house T.B. wanted to her sister to help her warm up with her before her basketball game, Jennifer ignored her and hung out with Dillion instead, that wasn’t right because T.B. needed Jennifer to help her.
The story takes place in Dillions home town, which the book never gave a direct name, but he lives in Maryland. “It was a cold day the morning I woke up to train for my triathlon, at least it’s nice and chilly in Maryland.” (1) I can’t tell much from this quote unfortunately, it was written very vaguely. The setting, as I said isn’t told very well so it doesn’t really add to the story unfortunately.
The author is trying to express Dillion’s feelings as he ages and his brothers death starts to fade from his memory more and more, his lesson in life is to always cherish what he has while he still has it, he didn’t even get the joys of his brother when growing up. The moral and life lessons are pretty similar. They both aim towards being nice to your relatives while you still have them. This story is about having enough courage to pull through the tough times and stick it out, Dillion shows that by staying strong throughout the whole story, he does hit rock bottom though. After that he realizes he needs to start getting out and living his life the way Preston would want him to. This book honestly showed me to show more respect for my family, I have a little brother who is four, and I know if I ever did something as selfish as what Preston did he might not be able to understand, but he would miss me a great amount. When my brother, Jake, gets older I’m going to show him this book so he can also learn from it. One of the problems in this story was Dillions father, he became depressed after Preston killed himself, that had a negative effect on Dillion, almost as if his dad was never around to help him. They actually do resolve this after his girlfriend’s coach helps him with some advice.
The story starts off with Dillion running a triathlon and his brother cheering him on, memories. It then proceeds to hint at drug abuse, by his brother Preston. Dillion wakes up one morning to find Preston sitting in his driveway, emotionless. Dillion goes outside to talk to his brother, Preston is very rude during this whole confrontation and pulls out a gun, he starts waving it around and then eventually shoots himself in the head. After that Preston seeks help from his girlfriend, Jennifer and they cope through it and talk about it while he writes in a journal expressing his feelings. The story ends off in a good note after they have all discussed Preston’s life and retrieved his ashes after being cremated, the whole family has gone to counseling, and it all ties together in a good, happy note.

“Since it was Jurgis’s first experience, these details naturally caused him some worriment; but the other laughed coolly—it was the way of the game, and there was no helping it. Before long Jurgis would think no more of it than they did in the yards of knocking out a bullock” (Sinclair 287). Although his initial reaction to the crime concerned him, Jurgis suddenly had a change in emotion when his accomplice thought nothing of the deed. The impact that Duane plays in Jurgis morally is tremendous, as Jurgis never cared for the opinions of those around him.…

On March 5, 1770, British soldiers were badgered to the point of outrage by a small group of boys (Wheeler and Becker, 75). The soldiers eventually retaliated at the group and the church bells started ringing alarming the town that a fire had broken out only leading the numbers in the crowd to increase (Wheeler and Becker, 75). Captain Thomas Preston and his sentry were called to the scene to assist. However, their attempts to redirect the crowd were unsuccessful. It is at this point that a musket was fired and the situation continued to escalate leaving some dead and others wounded (Wheeler and Becker, 75). Was Captain Thomas Preston guilty of murder by ordering his soldiers to fire? Or was he innocent and the soldiers fired out of provocation and their own volition?…

Dalva was a very beautiful woman which resulted in her being able to date and make love to a lot of men. She rarely had deep feelings for any of these men other than to make love to become pregnant which she did with one man and that unique man was Duane. Harrison made this character a motivation piece in this novel by making him the root of her life and the prime cause of her depression. Her depression was partly devoted to Duane so much that “she would see him at night” as well as “hear him breathing and singing” (233). Harrison right off the bat in the book developed Dalva as a character to have this depressed and negative behavior which comes up repeatedly in the novel. As the author of this book, Harrison added an aspect of the novel of an addictive will to understand where her next or past relationship will take her…

Jonathon made it well known through the frustration in his voice and the clenching of his teeth that he was upset to be in the hospital. He felt that he did not have any mental health disorders or substance abuse problems, though his chart and assessment stated otherwise. The patient also vocalized his anger with his parents through vulgar language and loud, rambling thoughts. He blamed his parents for putting him in the hospital, stealing his independence and “locking him up”. It was extremely challenging to listen to the patient talk about his parents in this negative way because from an outside point of view and through patient records it was evident that his parents had his best interest in mind. His mother did call the police to find Jonathon because she was…

People had been throwing snowballs and clubs that soon turned the crowd into a mob. After one club hit a soldier on the head, causing him to fall down his gun discharged. The other soldiers fired after him and leaving five dead and more wound. Preston told them specifically not to fire, but the soldiers had to act in self-defense. People think that all of the accounts stating that Preston told them not to fire are a lie but I believe not. The soldiers and Captain that fired on March 5th, 1770 are in fact not guilty for committing five…

The witnesses for the prosecution have very different stories as do some of the witnesses for the defense. Ebenezer Hinkley testified to the fact that the crowd became rowdy and accosted to guards with sticks and other flying objects. He claims he saw Montgomery gets hit before he fired the first shot and said he was approximately 16 feet away from Captain Preston and never heard the man give the order to fire. The were lapses in time between each shot. This seems to be a general consensus between many of the witnesses.…

“Derek!” I shout as loud as I virtually can over an angry text message, “I’ve had it! I’m so done with today. I need to clean something, so I’m coming over.” The only time I ever call D-Rok by his full name is when I’m so beyond mad that the “D” and the “Rok” of his nickname collide together to create the sound of his birth name. I’m sure he already knows what’s wrong, he always does, so I slip my giraffe Toms on my feet, grab my keys, slam my door, and stomp down the stairs of my apartment complex. My mood starts to lift at the beauty of the day, but on the way to my car I briefly trip over a crack in the sidewalk, which immediately reminds me of my rage for this cursed day. With my new-found memory, I slide in my car, forget the seatbelt, chuck my phone, and blast my radio as I speed, enraged, down the street to D-Rok’s house. Immediately once I walk in the door, my mood is completely flipped. I’m greeted by Jordan, his 5 year-old angel of a daughter, and his warm embrace. “It’s today, isn’t it?” he asks, “Today’s the day Stephan took his life some years ago.”…

I believe raising children is special. Raising children is really important. Also I think I would be very proud of raising children specially my own children. "What should I do?", is the question many parents are asking when wondering if they should raise their kids in a faith-based community. Yes, you would think that it's a simple yes or no answer. The truth is that there is much more reasoning behind the yes or no that parents ultimately decides. There are many reasons for either decision, all of which make sense in their own way. If you decide that yes you should raise them in a faith -based community, it does have its benefits. Faith-based communities teach important values in life such as caring, self-dependence, and many life morals. It helps to teach the kids to help the community and even reach out and help others. Raising your child in a faith-based community should not be done because the negative effects far out weigh the positives.…
