Title:

Properties of Gases

Purpose :

The purpose of this lab was to learn about properties, both physical and chemical, of gases and to be able to identify them.

Materials:

Matches
Toothpicks
Pie tin
Marker
White Vinegar
Hydrogen peroxide
Measuring spoons
Straw
Tissue paper
Baking soda
Test tubes 24 Well Plate Pipet Stoppers for the test tube Chemicals provided by Labpaq

Procedure:

Place a piece of mossy zinc in the test tube that contains diluted HCl.
Cap the tube with the stopper that has the gas delivery tube through the center of it. Stand it up straight in the well plate, using the tissue paper if necessary
Fill

Strike a match and hold it about a cm away and squeeze some of the gas onto the match. Record results.
Fill the pipet with water again. After 2/3 of the water has been displaced, remove it and place it into the well plate (keep it inverted.)
Place a few pieces of Mn into the second test tube.
Add hydrogen peroxide to fill the tube to about 1 cm from the top.
Place the tubber stopper with the gas delivery tube in the test tube and put the tube in the well plate. Again, try to keep it upright.
Observe the reaction and record results.
Fill the wide neck pipet bulb with water again, and place it on the gas delivery tube.
Once all of the water has been displaced, remove it and use your thumb to keep gas from escaping.
Light a toothpick and extinguish it quickly. With the end still glowing, insert it into the pipet. Record observations. Put 1 mL of limewater into one of the wells in the well plates Put half a teaspoon of baking soda into the test tube. Holding the tube over a pie plate, add vinegar. After the reaction subsides, cap the tube with the stopper that has the copper gas delivery

After recording your observations, remove the stopper and stick a lit match into the tube and record your observations. put another 1 mL of limewater into one of the wells. Put a small piece of Alka Seltzer into the test tube. Add a pipet full of water and cap the tube. Place the end of the delivery tube into the limewater and record your reaction.

Data (15 Points):

Data table: experiment results
Gas Flame reaction Glowing splint limewater reaction bromothymol blue reaction
Hydrogen Glowed brighter
Oxygen Re-ignited flame and popping sound
Hydrogen & Oxygen N/A
Carbon dioxide Cloudy Match died, produced vapor? might be just smoke
Alka Seltzer Blue
Breath cloudy
Questions (5points):

A. Give two reasons why we fill the gas generator test tubes almost to the top with chemicals?

First of all, you want to test the pure gas. If you let any escape, you will dilute the gas with air. Secondly, some gases might react to any oxygen that enters the tube.

B. What happens to the zinc in the hydrogen generation experiment?

It

The tube is installed vertically with the heating connections at the bottom. Handle and transport the tube with utmost care : vibrations and external impacts can cause invisible damage. Avoid sudden movement. Slowly insert the tube in the connection head so that sudden impact is avoided. If the dead weight of the tube is not sufficiently to overcome contact resistance in the connection head, apply gentle pressure. The ceramic parts must be always kept clean. If necessary, they should be cleaned with alcohol or acetone but no circumstances should they be rubbed with emery paper.…
