More Than a Sport
I am almost positive that if you asked more than half the population what their thoughts and opinions on cheerleading are, they would start off with the stereotypical view of pretty girls who jump around and yell for a sport, in which they have no idea what is going on. But, cheerleading is so much more to me, as a cheerleader a word like leadership takes on a whole new meaning. On the sidelines, in the classroom and in the community, cheerleading has given me experience with problem solving and taught me how to become a leader. Cheerleading has brought me a family, an escape from the outside world, and a reason to wake up every morning.

The “cheer family” is almost better than the family each of us have at home. Whether we are at practice, in school, or bonding through a team sleepover, it truly is one of the closest, tight-knit group of girls that I have encountered. With spending multiple hours through the week and even more throughout the years, you begin to learn more and more about each teammate, their fears, what makes them happy, and of course the latest drama between each cheerleaders friendships and love lives. But these multiple hours spent each week also come with arguments and disagreements. Whether there is bickering over counts, or tears through frustration of stunts not hitting there is always a breaking point, but just like any family, we stick together and push …show more content…
To me, cheer has taught me to be a well-rounded person. And although I’m just now getting the hang of it, having cheer four days a week, plus the out of nowhere added practices, has definitely taught me to balance my school, social, and athletic life. While my final year in high school is coming to an end, I hope my cheerleading career is only just beginning. With the major impact it has had on me the past years of my life, I hope to furthermore my experience in college, and who knows beyond that. With the friends made and the memories I’ve experienced with my team, I really do believe that cheer is more than just a

Every cheerleader gets fired up when someone tries to argue with them, whether or not cheerleading is actually a sport. It could be a cocky football player in one of their classes, a teacher that talks down about cheerleading, or just a friend that wants them involved in something more “athletic.” When in all reality, cheerleading requires just as much effort as any other sport. The Merriam Webster defines the word ‘sport’ as “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other”. In cheerleading, a strong bond unlike you can find in any other sport cultivates. The people on the teams aren’t just teammates. They’re more than that. They’re friends. They’re family. They quite literally put their lives in the hands of their teammates every single day, just for the possibility of getting even a fraction better at what they do. There’s a trust that is not easily broken, in addition to a strong dedication to their team. And with that dedication comes practice. The average cheerleader practices about ten hours a week. (Yager). Some teams however, like Mira Loma High School cheerleaders, practice six days a week, eleven months a year. That’s roughly 792 hours of just practice spent with the…

Many people argue that cheerleading is not a sport, I beg to differ. I, as a 3 year returner of the Huntington Park High Cheerleading squad, know how difficult, intense, and extreme the job is. Being in cheer does not only mean throwing on a beautiful sparkly, glittery, and glamorous uniform; it means dedicating time, strength, and putting physical health at risk. The chances of getting hurt in cheer are just or if not higher than getting hurt in football, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis, etc. People don’t acknowledge what cheerleaders do in detail, they know the basics which is why they believe it isn’t a sport.…

    Cheerleading As A Sport

Many people do not know that cheerleading does. While making a competition routine, the coach has to make sure everything on the score sheet is included. If someone doesn’t have a tumbling skill that everyone else does, the coach has to figure out a way to make it look like that person is doing what everyone else is doing. Whether they do a toe touch when the other team mates are doing a flip, or they crouch down so they can’t be seen, they have to look included. If the whole team can not get a certain skill on the score sheet they have to “dumb down” the stunt to make it more manageable but look like it is the real complicated stunt. Going into competition, if your team knows you’re up against a really good team with a complicated routine, you have to fight to make your routine look cleaner. Good formations, tight motions, peppy facials and energy with a bad routine could still make you one of the top teams. Everything needs to be fun to watch and impress the…

Throughout middle school and high school, an immense amount of my time was spent cheering. During the six years I devoted to the program, I ascertained how to be an advantageous representation of my school by doing what was proper, even if I was doing so alone. Although cheerleading has a deficient status, cheerleaders are held to a considerably higher standard in comparison to other athletes at my school. As a cheerleader, one is required to keep a high grade point average and maintain a virtuous reputation, for cheerleaders are seen as a reflection of the school. Due to my abilities as both a cheerleader and a leader, I succeeded in securing a spot on the Varsity squad for my sophomore through senior year. At the beginning of my senior year,…
