Cheerleader in Me
Many people don't believe that high school sports impact students lives during or far after high school. I believe this to be wrong through personal experience. Cheerleading for Fortuna High School has influenced almost every aspect of my life and has made me stronger emotionally and physically. During my four years cheering at Fortuna High School, I have met some of the most wonderful people and have been blessed with the best friends I have to this day. Cheerleading has given me an escape from life for two hours daily, something I could not be more thankful for. Being part of a sport has made me more focused and driven on grades, college and many other aspects of life. I have maintained a 3.5 GPA during all eight seasons of cheerleading and have been awarded with a scholar athlete award every season. Cheerleading has made a huge impact on my grades throughout high school. Besides impacting my grades, cheerleading has also boosted my overall perception of myself. My sense of confidence has improved as well as my leadership skills from making up and teaching choreography and calling cheers at the games. I have learned to work with adults from experiences with my coach and assistant coaches. During my varsity years, I served as a role model to the junior varsity, earning the title “All Around Cheerleader” twice. This was an award voted on by my peers. Cheerleading has also influenced my work ethics. It has been a great character builder and this has helped me land my present job at Fortuna Ace Hardware and Fortuna Florist. Upon graduating, I plan to continue working during the summer to earn money for college. In the fall, I will proceed with my education at a four year college that I have yet to decide. I plan of majoring in Art Education and eventually becoming an art teacher. My many skills brought forward from my high school cheerleading experience will help me in achieving my goals. I feel truly blessed to have been cheering for as long as I have with the best results possible.

Cheer is not just a sport. It is intense physical activity with a purpose- to serve as a motivation for the team. Taking two full sport seasons, the dedication and energy required from these young cheerleaders is unbelievable. For up to 2 1/2 hours a day, they work together to achieve their goal: perfect routines to make the Hilltop Football and Basketball teams engulf in victories. These devoted cheerleaders spent 3 days at Cheer Camp and one day at the District Camp, where they expanded their knowledge and creativity for our school. However, these days spent were not for competition, but for learning from each other. Still, their natural competitive nature filled their minds and actions, self-motivating them to execute their best efforts…

The second reason is one that I think is an important one, some people don’t like sports, but still want to do a sport. Another reason is that if people want to cheerlead in high school, they probably would want to have some practice and do it in junior high. The fourth reason is that people sometimes are nervous and when people are cheering for them, they aren’t as nervous ( this has happened to me ). The last reason to have cheerleading at our school is that if we have a team, it would probably attract more people because I think it shows that we want everyone to do their best and like to help them by cheering them…

I want to be a Clemson Cheerleader because I love cheering. Since I became a cheerleader in the seventh grade, I have lived for every practice, game, and competition. Cheerleading has given me some of the most amazing memories, friends and mentors and it has shaped a lot of my personal character. Having to work with others to accomplish a common goal teaches you to value other people’s strengths and pushes you to be better communicator and collaborator. Cheering is something that has become ingrained in every aspect of my life. In the off season I help coach a youth all star squad and make sure to tumble three times a week. I also grew up watching college football and going to games and I could never take my eyes off the cheerleaders. They…

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

Cheerleading has always been a part of me, ever since I was a little girl. I grew up hearing my mom tell me stories about when she was a cheerleader. She took me to high school football games to watch my cousin cheer. I cheered for JFL in fifth and sixth grades and I absolutely loved it. In seventh grade, there was an actual cheer tryout and…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

Cheerleading is typically, in the United States, a year round competitive sport that includes at least three sports seasons. The typical sport starts beginning of summer with the usual stunting camp, then fall, winter, and spring. Sometimes though it isn’t just for four years of high school and then it is over. According to George GS (1990) most cheerleaders start at an early age and is estimated to include over a million participants between the ages of elementary school and professional cheerleaders for sports teams. As you can see not only is cheerleading a ten month sport but if a person decides to start at the age of five until the age of twenty-five then they will have done cheer for two hundred months out of their cheerleading careers. Out of this time these kids have also been in school which calls for studying, time with friends, and once they hit the age of sixteen or seventeen they are giving up some time of not working. Every year the school work is getting harder and it seems as if more and more homework just appears. Between the usual times of after practice and bed time…

Confidence is a big deal when it comes to being a cheerleader it is a required characteristic that is built up within the sport itself. Before cheerleading I was the quiet, timid girl just trying not to make eye contact with anyone. Now I am outgoing and talkative because cheerleading helped find my confidence by forcing me to become open with my coaches and teammates. Also, the moment my uniform was on, my head was held high with a smile on my face. My choice of becoming a cheerleader showed who I really am and revealed my true identity of being an outgoing,…

I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. To this day, I would not even consider changing my commitment to cheerleading, for it has positively influenced my life and taught me countless lessons that will stick with me forever.…

Even though it sounds pretty corny and cliche, the team next year is going to be nowhere near the same without you. You’re always so supportive of each and every single girl on the team and I know that everybody can trust you the most with any problem that they have, whether it be on the cheer time or their personal life. You’re always there for the team, helping out in any way possible, whether it be fixing a whole pyramid with counts five minutes before halftime or by being a representative for our team at every orientation or school event. You represent exactly what a cheerleader should be, always showing school spirit, always trying to encourage the team to be friends with one another, showing enthusiasm during sidelines and spiriting instead of just waiting for halftime, and always expressing a kind charisma no matter what is going on in your personal life.…
