Checks And Balances In Animal Farm

Imagine living in a society where you are brainwashed into believing something is good, where you are forced to follow someone who is addicted to power. A society where you have no say, but you think that is okay. On Animal Farm, that is reality. The animals rebelled against the humans on their farm and took over, everything was good at first, but soon, the pigs became power hungry. They needed to be in charge, and Napoleon, the leader, became so attached to his power, he was willing to sacrifice other animals life, to simply stay in charge. The system of checks and balances used in the United States could have helped Animal Farm prevent Napoleon's abuse of power by not allowing him to change the commandments to fit his needs, by not allowing
The equivalent of this in the United States system of checks and balances is the cabinet, the cabinet is a set of people who advise POTUS to make certain decisions. However, to make sure these people are fair and have a variety of opinions, they need to be approved by Congress before they can be in the cabinet. In Animal Farm, Napoleon picked them himself, this way, they would always agree with him. This committee of pigs was also treated better than the other animals, this breaks the 7th Commandment, all animals are equal. To cover up the fact that this was wrong, Squealer explained to the animals, “It was absolutely necessary, he said, that the pigs, who were the brains of the farm, should have a quiet place to work in… Nevertheless, some of the animals were disturbed when they heard that the pigs not only took their meals in and kitchen and used the drawing room as a recreation room, but also slept in the beds.” (Orwell 66). The pigs got a better place to sleep, eat, and work, simply because they had a different role in the production of the farm.
