Click! I heard the door slide open, hitting the wall with a soft thud. I opened my eyes and saw the shadow of a dark figure holding a knife in the doorway. I pulled the blanket up to cover my face, leaving only my eyes uncovered. I heard the creak of a floorboard, and the shadow advanced towards me, a silent murderer. I slid completely underneath the blankets, willing myself to wake up from this nightmare. I heard the sound of another footstep, whipped of the blanket, and screamed at the top of my lungs.

The next thing I knew, bright lights had flooded the room, burning my eyes till I squinted. My mom stood in the doorway, disheveled and wild-eyed.
“Why on earth did you scream like that,” she asked, voice still hoarse with grogginess.
“There was…just a second ago…a murderer in my room,” I stammered. My eyes flashed around the room. Where could he be? I saw my mom’s lips tighten, and she put her hands on her hips.
“This can’t keep going on. Last week, there was a burglar in the kitchen, two nights ago a psychopath in your closet, yesterday an assassin outside your window, and now this! I don’t know what you’re trying at, but it needs to stop right now.”
“I swear! I’m not lying. He’s got be in here somewhere. Why don’t you believe me?” I questioned, exasperated that she was dismissing my cries for help.
“I’m sure he is. You let me know when you find him. Until then, stop trying to get attention, and go to bed!” With that, she switched the light off, slammed the door shut, and left me in the darkness alone. I told myself that I was being stupid. Of course there was nobody in my room! I was being ridiculous. I forced myself to shut my eyes and go to bed.

Just as my eyes started to flicker shut, I heard a noise from under my bed. “It’s nothing. It’s all in your head,” I told myself repeatedly. Just to be sure, I slid my head under my bed with my eyes closed, convinced that there was nothing there. I slowly peeled one eye open only to find a burglar, assassin, psychopath, and murderer staring right back at me.

I closed my eyes and as I opened them I was looking straight at my mother. That instant our eyes were locked I never wanted the lock to break. Another tear slipped down, and I could taste the salty warmth on my tongue. The crash took five seconds but it felt like ten years. This time I heard the words “I’m wrong mom. I’m sorry mom.” In an instant the noise grew so loud it seemed like I was standing in the middle of a nuclear bomb. Not a second later it was silent and the world around me went pitch…

Tired, with a headache, and not in capacity to maintain my eyes open, I remembered next day was Halloween, which was the last thing I remembered before falling sleep. I woke up and saw the watch, it was three o’clock a.m. I listened to a weird sound that came from my closet; it was soft, but I could hear it like a rat scratching the walls. Intrigued about what was happening, I woke up and walked towards the closet. The sound gave me the chills.…

The cuts on Little Red’s cheeks stung and dripped small drops of blood down her face. I tried to open my eyes but all I could see was darkness. All around me darkness sits, still and quiet. I heard a creak, then a minuscule and weak voice talked, “Sydney, are you alright?” “Mmm” was all I could get out of my weak and tired body. Then the voice talked to me again, “Sydney, this is Dad speaking. The doctor just told me that the impact of you hitting the seat in front of you was very hard, it blinded you for life.” Darkness grabbed me, never letting me be perky and happy again…

“Mom, mom, mom, mom!” I was practically screaming. I already knew what she was going to say. I just sat back on the couch and watched as a tear streamed down my face into my hand. I eventually fell asleep on the couch. I woke up at three in the morning and I could see the sun peaking out with the stars and moon retreating back until another night. I don’t know what came across me but I thought to myself why people are so cruel. I looked outside to see if anyone was out there. I just saw an empty street, just like one of those old ghost towns in old western movies.…

I faintly remember what happened that night, that’s the reason why I’m sitting here. I can’t think clearly, see straight and yet I continue to see glimpses of him, his baby blue eyes, greasy black hair and oily face that sheds a smile every so often. I didn’t mean for everything to be this way, I feel as if it’s my fault, that maybe I’m the suspect. I feel as if there’s a blunt knife digging deeper into the guilty walls of my soul. As I peer around the room, I notice one streak of sunlight, fighting for survival in the dark and dampened room.…

As I put my hand on the steel door knob my heart started beating faster to where it felt as if my heart was about to explode out of my chest. I turned the door knob and opened the door slowly and walked into a long hallway with windows covered in torn white curtains and dark brown stains. The only light seeping into the hallway was from the moon. As I got to the end of the hallway there was a wooden door with scratch marks and what looked to be a few fingernails jammed into the right side of the door. I didn’t want to open the door; I was too scared to see what was waiting for me on the other side. I felt a soft tug on the bottom left of my gown. I held my breath and my eyes were wide in fear. As I slowly turned around I saw a little girl standing a few inches in front of me. She was wearing the same exact gown as mine and had long dark brown hair but I couldn’t make out her face. All that was shown was the tip of her nose but everything else had a dark shadow covering the rest of her facial features. I bent down and asked her, “What’s your name?”, but she wouldn’t answer me. I heard a click behind me and jerked my head around to see someone had opened the door. When I turned back around she was gone. I got back on my feet and walked into the room behind me and…

I followed her up stairs and noticed that she was turning right, the exact same direction where my room was. My mom opened the door and at once you could feel the intense heat of the room. The windows were shut; piles of magazines were on my knight stand table where I kept my favorite book Frozen by Robin Wasserman. My mother took a deep breath and instantly tumbled to the floor. She began to weep and bellowed out my name “Sarah.” Immediately I knelt to the ground trying to console her, I knew that it wouldn’t help though. “Mom, please don’t cry look at me I am right here look at me!” She instantly turned to my direction, when our eyes met I thought “yes, that’s it just try a bit harder!” As she pulled herself together, she wiped off all the tears away from her face. I sat on the floor, feeling defeated and frustrated. How come she isn’t trying hard enough to see me? But then I realized it was because I was dead; robbed of my future and most importantly my mother.…
