Characterization In Rikki-Tavi, By Rudyard Kipling: Summary
Authors use characterization to show how a character is described. We understand characters in literature by paying attention to what they say, what they do, and how other characters react to them. The story, "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," by Rudyard Kipling, is the story of how a mongoose, Rikki-Tikki, is taken into the home of a family living under a big bungalow in Segowlee cantonment. While exploring their garden, he comes across two tailorbirds, Darzee and his wife. Darzee and his wife explain that when one of their babies had fallen out of their nest, Nag quickly ate him. While asking who Nag was, being a newcomer, he then meets two villainous and infamous cobras, Nag and Nagaina. Nag and Nagaina both terrorize their garden, forcing the other animals …show more content…
Throughout the whole story, Nagaina's motive was murder. She was attempting to murder the human family, and also attempting to murder Rikki-Tikki. "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" is an insight on a mongoose, named Rikki-Tikki, and how he defeats two malicious cobras, Nag and Nagaina. When a family adopted Rikki-Tikki and brought him into their bungalow, Rikki-Tikki explored their garden and met two tailorbirds, Darzee and his wife. He had heard their cry and approached, asking what is the matter. They answered with grieve, for two cobras who go by Nag, had eaten one of their babies. As Rikki-Tikki asked who Nag was, a slither came, and there stood Nag. While facing Nag, Nag stalled by talking to Rikki-Tikki and distracting him from Nag. Luckily, Darzee warns Rikki-Tikki and jumps as high as he could into the air, just enough so that the head of Nagaina, the wife of Nag, whizzed by. Nagaina soon formulates a plan into murdering the humans, but soon the valiant Rikki-Tikki defeats both Nag and Nagaina. Based on these examples, Nagaina can be characterized as evil. I would understand why Nagaina would attempt to murder the humans, despite that, I feel pity for her. She had lost her husband and many of her eggs. I understand why she would attempt to kill the humans, after believing they have murdered Nag, her husband. Nagaina connects to the theme of the story, since Rikki-Tikki must overcome his fear and fight off Nag and Nagaina, who are bigger and stronger than he

No, Rudyard Kipling inaccurately portrays a mongoose in his story “Rikki Tikki Tavi”. In “Rikki Tikki Tavi”, it is about a mongoose who gets washed up, but gets saved when a father and his son find the mongoose’s unconscious body on the ground. They bring him inside their house, rap him up in a blanket, and heats him up. He becomes conscious again and runs around, and since they saved him, he acts like a pet to them. He eventually sees two birds up in the trees yapping about the cobras.…

When fighting with Nagaina, she went down to a hole “and she plunged into the rat hole where she and Nag used to live, his little white teeth were clenched on her tail and he went down with her and very few mongooses- however wise and old they maybe, care to go into the hole.” (27) This shows how brave Rikki-tikki was since none of the mongooses will ever go down, but he did because “Rikki-tikki knew he must catch her or all the trouble will begin again.” (26) Another time he showed bravery was when Nag was in the water jug he risked his life to jump in there and hold on. “Then he jumped. The head was lying a little clear from the water jar, under the curve of it; and as his teeth, Rikki braced his back against the bulge of the red earthenware to hold down the head. This gave him one second purchase, and he made the most of it. Then he was battered to and fro as a rat shaken by a dog…..” (22) He could of just let go,but he chose not to and wait into the humans killed Nag completely. This shows how brave he was.…

It gave a breathtaking picture of the story. With an edge of your seat beginning, the video showed Rikki-Tikki being swept away by a flood. A family saves him. The two cobras, Nag and Nagaina, want to take over the garden. They plan to kill the family, and then force Rikki-Tikki to leave. This is the same problem in the other medium. Unlike the book, the movie shows the cobras having a short conversation about their plan to kill the family. After the conversation, Nag goes into the bathroom and waits. Though Nag is still awake, Rikki-Tikki leaps on top of him and tries to kill him. He is thrown around, again, but still kills Nag. The father came in with a big gun and shot Nag. Now that Nag is dead, Nagaina must kill the family herself. Rikki-Tikki stops her by killing her eggs, and taunting her with the last one. Nagaina slithers to her hole, and Rikki-Tikki is close behind. Once they both were in the hole, Rikki-Tikki kills Nagaina. This scene is very overwhelming because of the background music and image. The movie of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi has a very similar, but lively, problem, climax, and…

In one case, Nagaina says, “Let us talk, You eat eggs. Why should not I eat birds?” (para 27). As a result Nag is acting like a mature adult in this sentence trying to compromise, why it is ok to eat birds. This shows anthropomorphism that Nag cares more about his hunger than Darzee's baby. For evidence, Rikki says to Nagaina, “Come and fight with me.”(para 92). Rikki Tikki is reckless and is showing a personification by asking Nagaina to fight with him. Rikki Tikki is courageous and is protecting his friends from Nagaina the vicious snake. In this story a lot of the animals have human characteristics who will put up a fight for their…

Characters are what draw the reader into a work of fiction. Analyzing another person’s thoughts and feelings is fascinating, so it is crucial that an author depicts a complex character that will occupy the reader’s minds. Many characters surprise us through the course of a story, developing in unexpected ways. An author can use various literary devices to reveal their characters gradually. Hernando Téllez wrote a short story called ‘Just Lather, That’s All’ that contains two contrasting characters. ‘The Harness’, which was written by Ernest Buckler, also includes very strong individuals. They are both portrayed in detail and they leave no doubt in the reader’s mind of the nature of these characters.
